POSTS STORIES REELS

Phil Bourjaily has been writing about shotguns longer than some of us have been shooting them. He’s also a good friend of Boss and one of those guys who’d rather shoot something himself than sit around arguing about what it ought to do. Our kind of guy.

For the latest issue of Delta Waterfowl, Phil took a look at copper and asked whether it might be “the next premium non-toxic.” Naturally, he did some shooting.

He put Boss's Legacy bismuth and CuProX Warchief on paper. Then he put them in ballistic gel. Somewhere along the way, he got hung up on those weird little flat spots and divots we call Turbuflow. Phil wasn’t entirely buying the dimples.

Then he shot them.

Warchief averaged 72% in his pattern testing, almost 10% better than the Boss Legacy loads he tested. His response might be our favorite line in the whole story:
“I may still not believe in the dimples, but I believe the patterns I shot.”

Fair enough, Phil.

The gel gave him something else to chew on. At 35 yards, 1,500 fps CuProX Warchief #5s penetrated right around 3.375 inches. So did our 1,350 fps Boss Legacy bismuth #5s. Some of the 12 bismuth pellets he tested broke in half on impact. The copper didn’t.

Here’s what we like about all of that: We had the numbers. Phil went and got his own.

They weren’t our pattern boards or our gel blocks, and he still isn’t ready to give those funny-looking dimples all the credit. Wouldn’t want it any other way, the numbers speak for themselves.

We’ve spent the better part of the last two years figuring out what copper could become. Different pellets, different surfaces, a whole lot of testing and a few regulatory adventures along the way. Now Phil Bourjaily is writing in the pages of Delta Waterfowl that what we’re seeing “may just be the beginning of waterfowl’s Copper Age.”

Well, shit.

From the Bench Series: How Does TurbuFlow Work? #bossshotshellsdothetrick #bossshotshells #cuprox #waterfowlhunting by @bossshotshells

Aaron Carter of the NRA's American Hunter publication spent a good chunk of last season shooting Boss Copper.

He patterned it at 40 yards. Shot it through different chokes. Hauled it to Virginia’s Eastern Shore with his son and put it to work on everything from buffleheads to surf scoters.

By the end of the season, he’d seen enough. In his words, he finished with “absolute confidence” in copper and couldn’t see any real-world difference between it and bismuth on waterfowl.

Pretty damn good.

Only problem was, about the time Aaron sat down to tell everybody about it, we went and changed the shot on him.

Sorry, Aaron. It’s how we roll around here.

The copper he tested worked. We knew it worked. Aaron went out and put his own time behind it and came to the same conclusion.

Meanwhile, back in Bridgman, we kept collecting data, chasing an ultra-smooth copper pellet. Round, hard, slick as hell. We got there. It flew great. It killed birds clean.

Then the numbers started pointing us somewhere else.

Countless iterations of shot later, smooth was history.

What replaced it was the surface-engineered pellet that became CuProX.

Those flat spots and divots look almost wrong next to those pretty little copper pellets we’d worked so damn hard to make the year before. Turns out pretty wasn’t the assignment.

Turbuflow uses the same basic aerodynamic thinking that makes a golf ball fly the way it does. And in our testing, that different way of thinking about the surface of a shotgun pellet produced up to 15–18 percent more retained energy than our legendary bismuth at 40 yards.

Before Aaron’s story even made it out the door, we’d already built something better. Not because Boss Copper failed—it did exactly what we built it to do. But the more we learned, the harder it became to ignore where the data was pointing. So we followed it.

That road led to CuProX, because around here, good enough has never been a reason to quit working.

“Top duck load or marketing gimmick?”

That’s the question @alexrobinson_mn over at @outdoor_life set out to answer when he bought a couple of boxes of CuProX. And yeah, he bought ‘em. We’d talked with Alex about copper before, but when it came time to test the stuff, he spent his own money and went about finding out for himself.

“That’s the best consistency I’ve ever seen out of a shotshell.”

“The No. 2 copper pellets far outperformed the steel…”

“The new CuProX loads slightly beat out the bismuth loads I’ve tested…”

He patterned it. Shot it into gel. Took it hunting. Compared what he saw to what we’ve been saying about CuProX since the beginning.

We’ve got a lot of respect for folks like that. Anybody can repeat what it says on the side of a box. It takes a little more effort to be skeptical enough to go find out for yourself. When a guy spends his own money and his own time doing it, we don’t take that lightly.

Truth be told, that’s pretty much how CuProX got here in the first place. A lot of questions, a lot of testing and enough patience to keep at it until we liked what the results were telling us. So tip of the cap to Alex.

Things are about to get loud down South.

Early season has been working its way down the map, and this weekend more Bossmen south of the Mason-Dixon finally get their turn.

Boss #7 for the teal. Bug spray for the mosquitoes big enough to carry off your Money Bag full of shells.

And if the reports coming back from the north are any indication, copper’s been hell on ‘em so far. Keep ‘em coming.

How hunters should choke CuProX. by @bossshotshells

When we launched Boss with bismuth, we made a promise: build a non-toxic shotshell with the performance hunters hadn't seen since the good old days of lead.

That became our standard – and CuProX upholds it.

At 30 yards, CuProX #4 at 1350FPS performs neck-and-neck with lead #4 at 1250FPS.

Different material. Same expectation. Lead-Like Performance. by @bossshotshells

Seems like every July the same thing happens around here. The maps come out, the crew starts talking mileage, somebody remembers they forgot to fix the trailer lights again and before long Dirk and Aaron are headed down the highway debating whether Casey's breakfast pizza really is better than Kwik Trip's (The jury's still out...).

Truth be told, these trips have never been about setting up a booth and hoping somebody walks by. We started hitting the road because we'd much rather answer questions and share our gratitude face-to-face than through a telephone or keyboard. Some of you want to talk CuProX. Others want to argue factory vs. aftermarket choke tubes, pattern percentages or whether Boss #3/5's really are the answer to everything. A surprising number of conversations have absolutely nothing to do with ammunition and we're perfectly alright with that.

If you're headed to any of the shows below and you've been sitting on a question, don't hesitate. Ask it. If you've heard five different answers online, come get a sixth. If you're the twentieth guy that day to ask why we built CuProX or how it compares to bismuth, we'll answer it like you're the first.

That's the deal.
