Southbourne once had its own pier, and many people walking the prom today have no idea โš“ It opened in August 1888, built for the Southbourne Pier Company to a design by Archibald Smith, with regular sailings to and from Bournemouth. Storms in December 1900 and January 1901 almost destroyed the pier, the promenade and the sea wall ๐ŸŒŠ The pier was demolished within a few years, and it was gone by 1910, though remains were still reported in 1936 ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ ๐ŸŒ southbournelifestyle.co.uk ๐Ÿ”— For more like this, tap the link in our bio Did anyone in your family ever mention the old pier? ๐Ÿ‘€ #southbournelifestyle #southbourne #southbournepier #dorsethistory #bournemouthhistory by @bournemouthlifestyle
Love it or loathe it, few Bournemouth buildings got people talking like the IMAX ๐ŸŽฌ The Waterfront opened on Pier Approach in 1999, and its IMAX cinema followed in 2002, three years late. Critics said it blocked the sea views from Bath Road, and in 2005 viewers of TVโ€™s Demolition named it among the UK buildings theyโ€™d most like knocked down ๐Ÿ—๏ธ The council bought the building in 2010, voted to demolish it in April 2012, and it came down in 2013.
