My heart is full of gratitude

Saturday's opening of my solo exhibition, On Turning 250, at Blue Prolific Studios in Houston was everything I could have hoped for and more.

I'm always humbled by the outpouring of love and support I receive at my solo exhibitions, and this one certainly did not disappoint. To see so many family members, longtime friends, familiar faces, and new faces in the room was incredibly meaningful. Having my father and big brother attend one of my exhibitions for the very first time made the occasion even more special.

The artist talk was phenomenal! What meant the most to me was hearing how deeply the work and our conversation resonated with those in attendance. So many shared that they were moved by the meaning behind the exhibition and left contemplating the question at its center:

"If you had only the clothes on your back and could take just one item with you to move the culture forward, what would survive?"

The conversations that followed reminded me why I create. Art should do more than occupy space. It should provoke thought, preserve memory, challenge perspectives, and invite us to examine what we value and what we pass forward.

If there was one takeaway I hoped to leave with everyone, it was this: We must be stewards of our own narrative. We cannot leave the preservation, interpretation, and telling of our stories entirely in someone else's hands. Our histories, our traditions, our cultural contributions, and our lived experiences deserve to be remembered and represented on our own terms.

I'm also grateful to have welcomed a few new collectors into my artistic journey. Your investment in my work is an investment in the stories I'm committed to telling, and I never take that lightly.

A special thank you to Latoya Smith for hosting me at @bprolificstudios and creating space for this work and these important conversations.

To everyone who attended, collected, shared a kind word, asked a thoughtful question, or simply stood in the room and allowed the work to speak to you, thank you.

Yesterday was a beautiful reminder that the work matters, the stories matter, and the people who show up to receive them matter.
