When Brevard School Board member Megan Wright Punishes Speech, It’s Not About Education Anymore…It’s About Control An April 2025 report raises serious concerns about how Brevard School Board member Megan Wright is using her position, and what that means for transparency, accountability, and the First Amendment in our schools. Read the article here: https://thespacecoastrocket.com/moms-for-liberty-board-member-abuses-position-punishes-student-for-off-campus-email-criticizing-her/ According to the article, a student was punished after sending an off-campus email that criticized a sitting school board member. Let that sink in. Not disruptive behavior in a classroom. Not a threat. Not harassment on school grounds. An email...sent outside of school...expressing criticism of an elected official. That should alarm every parent, every student, and every citizen. Public officials are not above criticism. In fact, they are supposed to be held accountable by the very people they serve, including students. The First Amendment doesn’t stop at the schoolhouse gate, and it certainly doesn’t disappear just because the speech makes someone in power uncomfortable. But instead of respecting that principle, this situation suggests the opposite: that criticism will be met with consequences. That speaking out could come at a cost. That those in power may use their position to silence dissent rather than engage with it. That is not transparency. That is not accountability. And it is absolutely not what the First Amendment stands for. School board members are entrusted with shaping an environment where students learn how to think, question, and participate in democracy, not fear it. If students begin to believe that speaking up against authority will get them punished, what message are we sending? This isn’t about politics. It’s about principles. If we allow elected officials to blur the line between personal criticism and institutional authority, we risk creating a system where power protects itself and voices that challenge it are pushed aside. Brevard deserves better. Our students deserve better. And our Constitution demands better. by @bpswatcher

What the Brevard School Board Doesn’t Want You to Know About the 7% Staffing Cuts. We asked those impacted by the literacy coach and ESE support staff cuts to reach out and tell us their stories. They did…in large numbers. And that’s how we know what is actually happening inside Brevard Public Schools, because it’s coming directly from the people living it every day. by @bpswatcher

Federal Judge Ends DEI Enforcement Threat...and Brevard Should Pay Attention A federal judge in New Hampshire has formally ended the Trump-era attempt to restrict Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs in schools nationwide after the U.S. Department of Justice agreed to stop enforcing the policy. Let’s be clear about what this means. The federal government can no longer threaten to withhold funding from school districts, including Brevard Public Schools, simply for maintaining DEI initiatives. This lawsuit, brought by the ACLU and the National Education Association, argued that the federal guidance violated free speech and equal protection rights. The DOJ’s decision to drop enforcement made the case moot. The immediate threat is over. But here’s why this matters locally: Brevard’s current School Board has repeatedly signaled hostility toward inclusive policies and programming. Federal courts are now making clear that sweeping restrictions on diversity and equity initiatives raise constitutional concerns. DEI is not about politics. It is about: • Protecting civil rights and First Amendment rights • Supporting students with disabilities • Addressing disparities • Ensuring every child has access to opportunity When federal courts step in to stop enforcement of policies that threaten funding and constitutional rights, local boards should take notice. Brevard cannot afford leadership that chases culture-war headlines while putting federal funding and student protections at risk. The courts have spoken. The funding threat is lifted. The question now is whether our local board will prioritize students...or politics. by @bpswatcher
Public Schools Week is from February 23rd to 27th. It is an annual week-long celebration dedicated to honoring the invaluable contributions and achievements of educators and education advocates in our public schools and the communities they serve. This week is about celebrating something that belongs to all of us: our public schools. Not as political talking points, not as headlines, but as the heart of our community. From Titusville to Palm Bay, from beachside neighborhoods to inland communities, Brevard Public Schools serve families of every background and every walk of life. Our classrooms reflect the full story of the Space Coast...children of engineers, service workers, veterans, small business owners, healthcare workers, and grandparents raising the next generation. Public schools are where first friendships are formed and lifelong passions are discovered. They are where students learn not just math and reading, but how to think critically, solve problems, work together, and become engaged citizens. They are where differences sit side by side and learn from one another. Behind every successful school are the people who make it work. Teachers who stay late to help a struggling student. Paraprofessionals who provide patient support. Bus drivers who safely transport our children each day. Custodians who take pride in clean, welcoming campuses. Counselors who carry emotional burdens few ever see. These are the quiet heroes of our community. Public education is not a partisan issue. It is a public promise that every child, regardless of income, zip code, or ability, deserves access to a free, high-quality education. That promise is foundational to Florida and to this nation. During Public Schools Week, let’s remember what truly matters. Let’s recommit to putting students before politics, community before division, and education at the center of our decisions. Our public schools are worth celebrating. They are worth investing in. And they are worth protecting. Happy Public Schools Week, Brevard. by @bpswatcher
Every parent wants the same basic thing: for their child to learn, to grow, to be safe, and to have real opportunities in the future. That’s why education decisions should be guided by science, data, and logic and NOT not by politics, special interest groups, or business agendas. When your child struggles with reading, you don’t look for ideology. You look for what works. When students face anxiety or social challenges, parents want proven support systems, not debates. When graduation rates rise or fall, we should be analyzing the data and adjusting strategies accordingly, not arguing about culture wars. Education isn’t a stage for political theater. It’s a foundation for your child’s future. Research-based reading instruction works. Early intervention works. Smaller class sizes and stable teachers make a measurable difference. Well paid teachers treated as professionals make strong students. Strong mental health support improves academic outcomes. Transparent and accessible School Board members garner citizen involvement and respect. These aren’t opinions...they’re supported by decades of evidence. Parents don’t send their children to school to become pawns in someone else’s political battle. They send them to learn math, to read fluently, to think critically, to prepare for college or careers, and to develop into capable adults. If we truly want the best for our children, we have to insist that decisions about curriculum, staffing, budgeting, and school policy be rooted in facts and not fear. In measurable outcomes,...not political messaging and endless campaigning. In long-term student success...not short-term culture war battles and political wins. Science doesn’t belong to one party. Data doesn’t have an ideology. Logic isn’t partisan. Our children deserve an education system guided by what works...not by who shouts the loudest or appears on TV the most. Because at the end of the day, this isn’t about politics. It’s about your child. by @bpswatcher
George Washington wasn’t a partisan activist. He was the first President of the United States. He believed that an informed citizenry was necessary for self-government. In his view, education helped prevent factionalism, foreign influence, and instability in the young republic. Washington repeatedly called for the creation of a national university in the nation’s capital. He believed states should promote schools and civic education. Washington set the philosophical tone of our young nation: education was not optional...it was essential to the republic. And Washington made this clear: “Promote, as an object of primary importance, institutions for the general diffusion of knowledge.” From the very beginning of this nation, our leaders understood something fundamental...democracy depends on educated citizens. Knowledge must be shared widely in a free nation. Public education was never meant to serve politics...It was meant to serve the people. Here in Brevard County, when we advocate for strong public schools, we’re not pushing an agenda. We’re honoring a founding principle: that education strengthens liberty, civic responsibility, and self-government. Strong public schools are not left or right. They are American. Students before politics. Always. by @bpswatcher
It’s Official: Cape View Elementary Is Being Closed Tonight, the Brevard School Board voted 5–0 to close Cape View Elementary School, despite overwhelming opposition from parents, educators, city leaders, and the Cape Canaveral community. Let this be very clear: this is not just about Cape View. The School Board has openly acknowledged that any school with a utilization rate (that is the number of students in the school divided by the number of available seats) below 60% are targets. Based upon data from the school board's own 2025-2026 Student Accommodation Plan (http://bit.ly/4roExkD) the school board will be eyeing at least 18 other schools across Brevard Public Schools with utilization rates below 60%. That means 18 more school communities are now on the chopping block. If you are a parent at one of those schools, you are not safe. What happened to Cape View is a warning shot. Years of failed leadership, politics over students, business over students, reckless policy decisions, and hostility toward public education have directly caused declining enrollment…and now the same board is using that decline as justification to close schools. Cape View families begged for time. They begged for real solutions. They begged to keep a neighborhood school that has served generations. The board didn’t listen. Instead, they chose consolidation, longer commutes for young children, the dismantling of a tight-knit community, and the quiet normalization of closing public schools one by one. If this board can close Cape View unanimously, they can close your school too. Parents across Brevard County should be paying attention. Organizing. Speaking up. Showing up. Because under this school board’s leadership, no school is “safe,” no community is protected, and no promise is guaranteed. Cape View was just the beginning. If you are a parent of a student at one of these schools, please become aware that the Brevard School Board will not care about the damage to your community if the school closes…after all…to them public schools are just businesses...to close at will. by @bpswatcher
