🎃 3 Super Scary Breastfeeding Myths – Busted! 👻

Breastfeeding advice can sometimes be frightening, especially when you're already navigating the challenges of feeding a baby. But how much truth is there behind some of these common worries?

This Halloween, we're busting three breastfeeding myths with the help of three lactation experts ⬇️

👻 MYTH 1: Cluster feeding means your baby isn't getting enough milk.

💬 “Babies may want to feed very frequently at certain times of the day, and this doesn’t automatically mean they’re not getting enough milk.”

— @hannahcroftibclc

🦷 MYTH 2: You have to stop breastfeeding when your baby gets teeth.

💬 “Not true! Babies and toddlers can continue breastfeeding happily for months or even years after their teeth erupt.”

— Regina Kincaid, IBCLC @kindestmilk

🤧 MYTH 3: You should stop breastfeeding when you're ill.

💬 “For many common illnesses, such as colds and flu, continuing to breastfeed is usually possible and can help your baby receive antibodies through your milk.”

— Registered Midwife Louise Brandman @breastfeeding_educator_hub

The takeaway? Don't let scary stories and common misconceptions leave you feeling worried. Every breastfeeding journey is different, and reliable information and the right support can make all the difference.

🩷 Baby Loss Awareness Week: Don’t forget the other parent.

When a pregnancy ends in miscarriage, much of the clinical care naturally focuses on the woman experiencing the physical loss.

But alongside her may be a partner who is frightened, grieving and struggling to process what is happening.

They may be watching someone they love go through something devastating, while trying to manage their own emotions and find a way to help.

As healthcare professionals, how can we make sure they feel seen, too?

🩷 Acknowledge them. Make eye contact, introduce yourself and recognise that they may also be experiencing a profound loss.

🩷 Include them. Where appropriate, involve them in conversations and explain what is happening, rather than allowing them to feel like a bystander.

🩷 Ask, don’t assume. Some partners want to talk; others need quiet or practical information. Ask what would help them.

🩷 Be mindful of the little things. Practical tasks may need doing, but remember that a partner is not simply an extra pair of hands. Consider how requests and interactions might feel in that moment.

🩷 Offer support beyond the hospital. Make sure both parents know where they can access bereavement support and information about what happens next.

We cannot take away the pain of pregnancy loss. But we can influence how supported, respected and included a family feels.

A few thoughtful words, a moment of acknowledgement or simply asking, “How are you doing, too?” can make a difference.

This Baby Loss Awareness Week, let’s remember every baby and support every parent. 🩷

“You’re not the real mum.”
“That’s not real breast milk.”

When two mums share breastfeeding, the biggest barrier often isn’t the biology. It’s the people around them.

Both of these mothers are real. Both of their milk is real. 💛

My book covers how induced lactation works, what to realistically expect, and why the words we use matter. It’s for mums, and for every midwife, health visitor and professional who might support a family like this.

Leaving the NHS to build my own business was one of the best decisions I’ve made — but also one of the hardest, because nobody had taught me how to actually run a business. The clinical and support skills I had in abundance. The business skills? Not so much.

That’s exactly why I’ve been putting together Qualified to Profitable — a programme for maternity professionals making that same leap, covering the business side that training courses often don’t touch. The waitlist is open now

I’d love to know — if you’re a health or maternity professional thinking about starting your own business, what’s the one thing you’d most want covered? Drop it in the comments 👇

I never thought I’d leave the NHS. 🩺

18 years in maternity care, a career I loved… but after my third baby, burnout hit hard. Swapping shifts on the driveway with my husband, missing moments with my older kids — it wasn’t the life I wanted anymore.

So I made the leap. Two years ago, I started building something of my own — a business that let me be home, be present, and still use everything I’d learned as a midwife to support families.

This is the story of how Breastfeeding Educator Hub came to be. 💕

The feedback for this book has honestly been mind-blowing. 🥹💜

And then something happened that made me realise just how much this book can matter before breastfeeding has even begun.

I gave a friend a copy of Breastfeeding Against the Odds.

She was chatting with her 20-year-old daughter, who has been considering breast reduction surgery.

Her daughter said something that really stuck with me:

“But if I have a baby one day, will I be able to breastfeed?”

Her mum suddenly remembered the book I’d given her.

So they picked it up.

They found the section about breast surgery and breastfeeding, and the two of them sat together, reading and talking through the information and the questions it raised.

And I just thought…

THIS is why we wrote this book.

Not to tell women what decisions to make.

Not to promise that every breastfeeding journey will look the same.

But to give women and families information they can actually understand and use.

Because sometimes the questions start years before a baby arrives.

Sometimes women are making decisions about their bodies today and wondering what those decisions might mean for breastfeeding in the future.

And sometimes you just need somewhere trustworthy to start the conversation.

“An extraordinary journey to discover incredible stories about breastfeeding, but above all, about the strength of mothers and women.”

Honestly?

That means so much to us.

Every family has a story.
And every woman deserves the opportunity to be informed about her options. 💜

Breastfeeding + weight-loss medication: what should professionals know?

This is a conversation we’re likely to have more often as GLP-1 medicines become increasingly common.

A breastfeeding woman may ask:

“Can I take a weight-loss medication and continue breastfeeding?”

The answer isn’t simply yes or no.

The evidence is developing, and advice can differ depending on the individual medicine.

Early lactation studies are beginning to provide some useful information. For example, a small study of 8 breastfeeding women found no detectable semaglutide in breast milk following subcutaneous doses. A study involving 11 lactating women found tirzepatide was undetectable in most milk samples, with very small amounts detected in a few. However, these studies are small, and infant safety data remain limited.

There is also an important distinction between emerging research and current UK guidance/product information.

So, when supporting a breastfeeding woman, consider:

🩷 Which medication?
Semaglutide, tirzepatide and liraglutide don’t necessarily have identical recommendations.

🩷 Why is it being prescribed?

🩷 How old is the baby?
Is the baby premature or medically vulnerable?

🩷 Is breastfeeding exclusive or partial?

🩷 What does the current product information say?

🩷 Does the woman need specialist medicines advice?

And perhaps most importantly:

Don’t make weight, health or breastfeeding into moral issues.

A woman can want to manage her weight and want to continue breastfeeding.

Our role is to provide accurate information, acknowledge uncertainty and support informed conversations about the health of both mother and baby.

The evidence will continue to evolve — and our practice needs to evolve with it.

Can eating dates really help your labour? 🌴

Research suggests that eating 6–7 dates a day from around 36 weeks may help labour start on its own, and you may need less help to get it going.

The honest bit: the studies are small, and dates won’t replace your midwife’s advice.

Have gestational diabetes? Check with your team first, as dates are high in sugar.

Breastfeeding Against the Odds is out in the world.

Real, lived stories (some names changed to protect identities) of breastfeeding through cancer, prematurity, relactation, trauma — and everything in between.

18 years as a midwife taught me: every family has a story. This one’s for the ones who were told it couldn’t be done — and did it anyway.

Milk finds a way. 🌈

Two years ago, a day like this wasn’t possible without begging for annual leave and hoping it got approved.

Today, they’re elbow-deep in sand and I’m not watching the clock, checking a rota, or waiting for someone else’s permission to be here.

That’s not luck. It’s what happens when you build something that pays you whether you’re at a desk or on a beach — a book that sells while I sleep, a business that doesn’t need me clocked in to keep running.

18 years in the NHS gave me the knowledge. Building something of my own gave me this.
