When sculpture comes to life..

A few moments from The Birch Tree Family performance at the private view of Assembly at Hypha Gallery, South Bank, London.

It was wonderful to bring this work to life in the gallery, surrounded by so many people and incredible sculptural practices.

If you missed the performance, I’ll be performing again on Sunday 15 November at 2pm, followed by an Assembly artist tour at 3pm.

📍 Hypha Gallery, South Bank, Gallery 3, London
🎟️ Free exhibition, Thursday–Sunday, 12–6pm, until 15 November.

I’d love to see you there! 🙌

From a site-specific installation to festivals across Spain and exhibitions around the UK - The Birch Tree Family continues its journey.

Created in 2024, The Birch Tree Family began as a site-specific installation and live performance, nurtured through the @casartists Chapel Arts Studios Emerging Sculptors Development Award.

This year, the work travelled to @sismografolot Sismògraf in Olot, @labea.art Arbola in Pamplona and @hayfestival_esp Hay Festival in Segovia, and was also exhibited at the @sidneynolantrust Sidney Nolan Art Prize and Resonance at @fabricagallery , in collaboration with @sussexcontemporary .

Now the work has arrived in London for Assembly @assembly_rss_exhibition , a contemporary art showcase by the @royal_sculptors Royal Society of Sculptors, at @hyphastudios , Gallery 3.

‘Assembly’s’ Private view is just a week away!

It showcases 35 members and fellows of the Royal Society of Sculptors including myself at Hypha Gallery South Bank, curated by @studioalexandracarr and @breeze1778

The exhibition brings together practices spanning installation, object-making, architectural intervention, film, performance and material experimentation. Across the exhibition, sculpture moves between the intimate and monumental, the poetic and political, the familiar and unexpected.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a programme of artist-led conversations, tours, performances, workshops and other encounters, creating opportunities to experience the exhibition through the artists themselves and to explore some of the ideas, processes and materials that underpin their practices.

‘Assembly’ is one of @hyphastudios Freize Week events in their new big space Hypha Gallery South Bank at 42 Southwark Bridge Road. This autumn, Assembly brings together 35 members and fellows of the Royal Society of Sculptors at Hypha Gallery South Bank, following its inaugural presentation in Sunderland earlier this year. Opening during Frieze season, the exhibition brings a diverse group of established sculptors into a new architectural and cultural context, creating an opportunity for audiences, collectors, curators and artists to encounter contemporary sculpture beyond the conventional gallery framework.
Curated by Alexandra Carr MRSS and Alex Breeze of Breeze Creatives, Assembly began in Sunderland as an experiment in artistic freedom, exchange and collaboration. The London presentation continues that spirit while allowing the works to enter into dialogue with the distinctive context of Southbank and the international activity surrounding Frieze.
The exhibition brings together practices spanning installation, object-making, architectural intervention, film, performance and material experimentation. Across the exhibition, sculpture moves between the intimate and monumental, the poetic and political, the familiar and unexpected.
Together, the works explore the capacity of sculpture to transform space and shape human encounter, while engaging with themes including ecology, identity, migration, labour, landscape, memory and the human experience. Rather than presenting a single definition of what sculpture can be, Assembly reflects the breadth of approaches being pursued by artists working within the field today.
The move from Sunderland to London marks a further development of the project. Following its presentation within Sunderland’s historic Athenaeum building, Assembly now enters a very different cultural landscape, bringing the work of its artists into proximity with major institutions, galleries, collectors and international audiences during one of the most significant periods in London’s art calendar. by @breezecreatives

I am delighted to be taking part in the second reiteration of @assembly_rss_exhibition
at @hyphastudios Southbank , with 35 members of @royal-sculptors curated by @studioalexandracarr

I will be exhibiting Weight of Ornament and over the next couple of weeks I will be posting how the work was made .

From the 3D prints made by @torustorusstudios I applied the second thicker coat of silicon and a hard shell to complete the moulds . First image 3 completed panel moulds, 2 and 3 L/R panels , 4 image mirror images of each other although not quite identical.

Artist Spotlight: Farnoush Amini

Influenced by my memories from Iran where Amini grew up including the revolution, suppression, eight years war with Iraq and women’s lack of freedom, Amini extensively researches these subjects through documentary footage, articles or photos.

Amini looks beyond boundaries created by religious or political suppression to create her own language of temporality in her Installation and performance art practice.
