Joining this month’s #popsnobtripletseveninches challenge by @popsnobrecordcovers : three 7” singles by the same artist from my collection. Here are three from Guided by Voices, all from the 90s. I love a good single—Bob Pollard and Tobin Sprout seem to love the medium as well, having mastered the art of the 2-minute song.

Guided By Voices – Tigerbomb
(Matador – OLE 168-7; US 1995)

Guided By Voices – Motor Away / Color Of My Blade
(Matador – OLE 148-7; US 1995)

Guided By Voices – Fast Japanese Spin Cycle
(Engine – vroom-07; 7” EP, US 1994)

Howard Wales & Jerry Garcia—Hooteroll?
(Douglas—KZ 30859; US, 1971)

At last I’ve found an OG pressing of this odd record out in the wild. I first got acquainted with it in ‘92 when Rykodisc reissued it on CD. That version had two songs (“Morning in Marin” and “Evening in Marin”) not on this original Douglas LP, and one less (“A Trip to What Next”). Finding an original version on wax seemed near impossible back in those days. Cool to spin it tonight and hear how it sounded to Heads back in the early 70s. Can’t beat the rad cover art too. It was painted by Mati Klarwein who also created the covers for Miles Davis’s Bitches Brew and Santana’s Abraxis, among many others. I’ve always loved the back cover photo of Jerry and Howard on that old couch too. Hooteroll?

Contributing to @popsnobrecordcovers #copypopsnobquartet for September with just a few of my versions of Mahavishnu John McLaughlin’s seminal 1971 work My Goal’s Beyond.

The ‘rules’……. Do you have ‘double’ records (duplicates) in your collection?
For example, ‘Same record, but different sleeve’. US vs EU release, reissues, gatefold reissues, colored vinyl versions, RSD versions, etc.

Notice the Ryko edition has the sides reversed from the original release; what was originally side 2 is side 1 here. I bought it in November of 1990 (I wrote the date inside), and for years had no reason to think the order wasn’t the same as it was on the original.

Also note how the Ryko version has the erroneous apostrophe removed from “goal’s”.

Columbia—KZ 30766 (Canada; 1971)

Douglas—KZ 30766 (US; 1971 Pittman Pressing; uncommon label)

Douglas—KZ 30766 (US; 1971 Pittman Pressing

Ryko Analogue—RALP 0051 (US; 1987, clear vinyl)

Twink—Think Pink
(NAM 022 LP MONO; RE 1970/2017)

Is this the greatest psychedelic record ever made? I think it comes closest to hitting the intangible vibe of a trip. It’s at once real and absurd, heavy and subdued, and moves between zones with an inherent pulse that slithers and pounds. It’s as if good and evil forces took a bath and cancelled each other out, rendering all judgement nothing but an illusion of ego. It’s, um, hard to put into words.

I’ve heard this record countless times and I suppose with repetition anything becomes less exotic, but it continues to amaze. Just based on the production techniques alone I’m in awe of how they pulled it off. It’s not like I listen to it often, but when I do—whoa.

This mono reissue on Noiseagonymayhem is the version I reach for the most. It sounds great, and it comes with a cool 7”.

So yeah, I’m gonna say this is the greatest psychedelic album ever—at least for today, whatever that means.

Jimmy Smith—Paid In Full
(Mojo Records – MJ-12828; US quadrophonic, misprint, 1974)

I don’t know enough about Jimmy Smith’s personal life to be able to comment on where he was at in 1974, but by connecting a few dots in his career path, this album appears to occupy an interesting place.

With his long-standing association with Verve Records ending the year before in 1973, Smith took it upon himself to start his own label, Mojo Records. He’d already opened his own club in Los Angeles a few years prior. Both the label and the club would serve as an early example of an artist who took the promotion of his work into his own hands.

Paid in Full is the first LP on Mojo, and apparently was only available at Smith’s shows or through mail order. It’s got a nice, laid-back vibe to it, as if it has nothing to prove. Props go to guitarist Ray Crawford, who sounds melodically groovy not unlike Grant Green.

I’d like to think that this copy came straight from a Jimmy Smith gig at his club in ‘74. Who knows?

Rick White and The Sadies
(Blue Fog—VOID 522-1; translucent green vinyl, Canada 2024)

“[Dallas Good] may not have physically been here with us, but he is very much a part of it”, said Rick White (Eric’s Trip, Elevator, various solo work) on the tone of this new album, a collaboration with The Sadies.

I still find myself giving my head a shake when I am reminded of Dallas Good’s untimely passing two years ago. Did it really happen? Was it a dream? It seems too unlikely given his age and apparent health at the time.

Unfortunately, the reality of his tragic death won’t ever completely heal, and the scar serves as a reminder of the temporary nature of being, of moments that pass like snapshots that dissolve into memory.

There’s no question that Dallas’ absence looms ghost-like on this new recording, but good friend Rick White and the band serve up an excellent session that doesn’t stray much from their iconic sound, blending the kind of hot country licks with wistful, psychedelic sounds that we’ve come to love. White adds a slightly different colour here, one that I’m sure Dallas would’ve loved.

This is a great record with just enough to surprise even long term fans. I love the cover artwork by White too. by @bright_corners_wax
