Some more jacks from the archive! These fish leave an everlasting imprint in my memory, crazy how just seeing these photos brings back all the excitement of feeling the hit, winning the battle and getting them in the boat. The addiction is real! #mangrovejack #fishingaustralia #winner #instagay by @broadwaterbandit
Mangrove jack are one of those fish that can look completely different from one capture to the next. The classic red or coppery jack is probably the colour most anglers picture when they hear “mangrove jack” — deep reddish-orange through the body, often with darker red along the back and that unmistakable broad, powerful profile. Their colour can really pop when they’ve come straight out of a snag or rocky structure, especially in clean water. It’s a proper Queensland jack colour and one that never gets old. Not every jack comes out looking bright red. Some are much darker, with bronze, brown, olive and almost charcoal tones across the back and flanks. Fish living tight around heavy structure can develop some seriously dark pigmentation, and the contrast between the darker back and lighter belly can be unreal. These darker jacks are a good reminder that colour isn’t a reliable way to judge the fish — water clarity, habitat, depth, stress and even how quickly the fish changes colour after being landed can all play a part. Then you get the lighter jacks — more golden, orange or pinkish-red rather than that deep blood-red colour. These fish can look almost washed out compared with a dark snag-dwelling jack, particularly when they’ve come from clearer water or brighter environments. Even within the same system, you can catch two jacks that look completely different in colour and still have all the same unmistakable features. That’s part of what makes chasing mangrove jack so bloody addictive — you never quite know what colour is going to come sliding out of the structure next. #mangrovejack #fishingtales by @broadwaterbandit
This would’ve been one of the first big Gold Coast jacks I caught once I started documenting my fishing journey. Mangrove jacks had always been a favourite target species of mine growing up around the canals and this was the first proper one after a few years not fishing and just a couple of days after returning to the GC after fishing up north around 2019, which really reignited my passion for these fish! Some of you guys would’ve noticed me recycling my old photos lately, that’s not going to stop so get ready to re live some of the epic catches over the past few years! BUT GET READY FOR SOME NEW STUFF BECAUSE WE ARE BACK BABY!! #fishingpassion #mangrovejack #linkinbio #goldcoastfishing by @broadwaterbandit
Didn’t get a measure on this chunky jack that took a liking to the @zerekinnovation live mullet, but it would’ve been pushing that 60cm mark for sure! Released to become a proper lake monster 👹 by @broadwaterbandit

Another very healthy red dog from a little while back, this angry fella had me under the pontoon for most of the fight until I was able to turn him and win the short but intense battle! #fishingpics #mangrovejack #summervibes #gambling #winning by @broadwaterbandit
Sometimes there’s days where you cover 20km and catch fuck all, other days you don’t even start the motor and smack 2 healthy red dogs at the boat ramp within 15 minutes 👹 #fishing #mangrovejack #boatramp #winning #fish by @broadwaterbandit
Throwback to this pig of a jack I’ll probably never beat! 7.5inch swimbait hangin out of it’s gob, how big do you think it was? #fishing #mangrovejack #pb #memory by @broadwaterbandit
