9 string bridge for 9 string guitar. Made with a palm router, drill press and files. by @brockway_strings

Hey it’s a ‘72 ES-335 restoration post ! I’ve been at this work for 15 years now. I have some thoughts on that but decided it’s best to say less on here. 15 years is a good start tho. That’s right, I’m just getting warmed up is what I’m thinking. Thank you to my colleagues out there doing your thing. I feel like an outsider freak a lot of the time but this last year was a big turnaround year for myself and my work and couldn’t have done it without you. Hoping to pay it forward in the next decade and change. Also my clients have been cool as shit lately. Like the owner of this one. Cool as shit. Finish work can take a lot of time especially when you’re melting down old flakes of lacquer with butyl cellosolve and whatnot. So I appreciate patience when it comes to this stuff and if you’re not patient when it comes to this stuff then I don’t want to deal with you. Life is way too short for me to get all stressed out and have my world flipped upside down for anyone’s got damn guitar. Like right now I’m wearing a tropical shirt which means I’m fucking chill and you’d better be chill too or forget it. Okay. I gotta get back to work now cuz night time is the right time in this Sonoran heat by @brockway_strings

Here’s process pics of a new nut & bridge piece. Usually you’re replacing the saddle piece on a flat top bridge. I don’t get near as many archtop bridge top piece fabrication jobs but here it is: a common job all of us looths do and either have done or will do hundreds into thousands of times over in their career.

Client wanted a new nut for obvious reasons if you checkout the photo. The old bridge top wasn’t quite tall enough for where the neck angle was set and then why not make the new one compensated?

1) after shot of 1930’s Washburn guitar all finished and setup 2) gnarly old nut said to be compensated 3) cleaned up shelf. It was a mess. And the ox bone nut blank 4-5) measuring the nut at each end as I fit it to the shelf which was thicker at the treble side. 6) finished nut. bad photo but best I could pull off with the owner standing right there 7) ebony blank for bridge 8) in progress 9) finished bridge 10) neat label “tonk bros” 😎 by @brockway_strings

Compression fretting / refret on this 30’s Kay Kraft that had some interesting work done prior. I cleaned up the 9/10th fret area and decided (with the owners approval) to leave the dot marker at fret 10 out of respect for the French.

Swipe ⬅️ to see what I’m talking about plus before & after photos of the correction to the board (bow without string tension and then no more bow with string tension) plus a charming 1932 Epiphone headstock attached to a 1932 Epiphone archtop guitar that recently came through for a check up. by @brockway_strings

Been talking about making an instrument out of the grill of my Chevy. Finally got some moments in to make progress on it so you can see it in progress by @brockway_strings

Making an old splint repair on a 60’s J-50 top look better by @brockway_strings

Finished amidst the sweltering heat surrounding 2021 summer solstice in Tucson, Arizona. Numero 7.

Double whale tail bridge carved out of a chunk of kingwood gifted to me by Tom Fellenbaum when I worked in the repair shop at Acoustic Corner in Black Mountain, NC over a decade ago now. by @brockway_strings

Update by @brockway_strings

This Martin Dreadnought was played with a big open crack in it’s ribs for 20 years. I used G Flex epoxy by @westsystemepoxy and 11 spruce cleats on the interior to make sure the repair would hold up. Plus some touch up work to make it look ... nice.
