One of the greatest privileges of my work is creating opportunities that can genuinely change the trajectory of a young person’s life.

Today, I’m excited to share that the Direct Cash Transfer Prevention Program (DCTP) is officially accepting Interest Forms for Cohort 3.

This isn’t just about monthly direct cash assistance. It’s about investing in young adults with the support, financial education, housing navigation, case management, and community connections they need to build long-term stability and independence.

If you’re between 18–21 years old, live in San Diego County, and are experiencing housing instability or are at risk of homelessness, I encourage you to take a look.

If that’s not you, I have one ask: Please share this post.

Financial literacy hits different when the people teaching it have actually lived it. Tonight marked our 12th official workshop as the Direct Cash Transfer Program — a milestone that feels especially meaningful knowing where we started just a year ago.

What began as a delayed launch with 18 young adults quickly turned into simultaneously supporting two cohorts and 36 participants navigating housing instability, adulthood, money, and life in real time.

Tonight felt like proof of concept.

To celebrate Workshop #12, we hosted a panel of community members who turned side hustles, creativity, passion projects, and lived experience into income and opportunity.

Many shared stories of instability, uncertainty, self-doubt, and learning as they went — which made the conversation resonate even deeper. The engagement tonight was one of the strongest we’ve had all year.

Because sometimes financial education is budgeting and credit.And sometimes it’s realizing that the thing you’re passionate about could actually become something bigger.
Deep gratitude to everyone who showed up, shared honestly, and poured into our participants tonight.

April is Financial Literacy Month, and I’m feeling grateful to be part of a program that helps young adults build stronger foundations for adulthood.

Direct Cash Transfer is entering its 11th month of supporting young adults in San Diego County who are navigating housing instability and other barriers. In just 10 months, we’ve been able to provide 10 financial assistance stipends to each of our 35 participants and host monthly workshops centered on personal finance.

This work is about meeting people where they are and giving them the tools, resources, and education to make informed decisions that support stability and growth.

We believe the best learning happens when knowledge is shared — through lived experience, peer learning, and the wisdom of the community. We’re grateful to learn from the young adults we serve and remain open to feedback that helps us grow and do this work better.

91st minute. USA vs Algeria. Landon Donovan running onto that rebound and changing everything. 🇺🇸⚽️

That moment is what soccer feels like to me — belief, grit, and belonging.

Crazy to think… I didn’t grow up playing. I was the new kid at San Marcos High, barely knew the game, but somehow ended up on the team anyway. From there it became a part of me and had been for the last 20 years no matter where I have been —
futsal runs, Mar Vista Park, Sunday leagues… just chasing the game and the community that came with it.

Soccer gave me a place to belong before I even knew what I was looking for.

So this one hits different.

Grateful to know Ryan Berman — not just as my team manager in the 4S Ranch Men’s League, but as the author behind Landon. Getting a deeper look into the mindset, pressure, and journey of a legend like Donovan… it reminds you that greatness isn’t just talent — it’s resilience.

From MLS dominance to World Cup moments that united a country… this story is bigger than soccer. Thanks again to these two GOATs, Ryan and Landon.

NEW DAD LEVEL UNLOCKED.🔓

Our “innanet friends” over at @trading.card.world held a giveaway and blessed us with an amazing binder, some loose packs, and a bunch of other goodies that absolutely sent Myla Jo over the moon.

Since it’s her birthday month (the big 5!), we hit the road to visit a couple local shops and start her collection journey.

Big thank you to @ripz_n_hitz for the kindness you showed #TrainerMylaJo during her very first card shop experience. She grabbed a couple packs, a Furret full art, and even left with a stack of free duplicate cards to help build her collection.

Then we swung by @rare_and_sleeveless and the shop was packed, but they still made time for this little trainer. She picked out some “cutie cards,” a few packs, and even found a special surprise for her mama.

Side quest: building a special collection for mom, aka RapidxAshley — featuring Ponyta, Rapidash, and Galarian Rapidash.

Her Pokémon journey officially begins now, and we’ve got a lot to learn.

Aunties, uncles, friends, and fellow trainers — feel free to drop tips, trades, or knowledge along the way. However you want to be part of the adventure is welcome.

#ThrowbackThursday

Grateful for this pilot cohort of the Leadership in Action Series — a room filled with foundation leaders, executive directors, program managers, frontline staff, and lived experience experts. Folks I really look up to.

Different organizations.
Different titles.
Different years of service.

One shared commitment: doing the work better.

Each session was engaging and invigorating, but ending on Partnership, Community Relations, and Influence felt timely. Not because beliefs were challenged — but because clarity was brought to perspective.

More honesty.
More authenticity.
More connection.

We were reminded that influence doesn’t come from position alone. It grows when knowledge, experience, and resources are shared — especially across sectors.

Thank you to Iain DeJong, OrgCode, and the Regional Task Force on Homelessness for creating space for hard conversations and deeper collaboration.

If you’ve been thinking about joining that cohort, attending that meeting, or building that partnership — take the step. Scarcity shrinks when we choose shared learning over siloed work.

Starting the Year of the Fire Horse and Lunar New Year with intention.

At City Heights Chase Bank, our Direct Cash Transfer cohort 1 & cohort 2 gathered for a deep dive on credit, debt, and the types of accounts every young adult should understand — not from a place of pressure, but from a place of possibility.

Because assumed knowledge around money can be harmful.
Silence creates confusion. Confusion creates fear.
Conversation creates clarity.

What stood out most wasn’t just the presentation — it was the peer dialogue during and afterward. Participants teaching one another. Asking real questions. Sharing lived experience. Continuing the conversation beyond the workshop.

Grateful to Patrick Della and the team at Chase for showing up as partners and helping create a safe third space for financial education in our community. Financial institutions can play a meaningful role when they lean into education, transparency, and access.

Remember ¢ommon ¢ents is a space where we speak freely about money. No spin. No shame. No guilt. It is safe to say, “I’m just learning this today.”

I didn’t picture myself here.

Sitting under lights. Cameras rolling. Being asked to share my voice — my work — my perspective.
And yet, Year 6 asked me to show up anyway.

This past year brought moments I never planned for:
• Becoming a Program Manager
• Flying to Toronto for an international homelessness conference
• Speaking at my first conference
• Being a guest on a podcast
• Receiving recognition from people I deeply respect

I was surprised every time I was asked.
Scared more often than I’ll admit.
Honored always.

What grounded me was remembering why I do this work — walking alongside people, helping them sharpen the tools they already have, and healing parts of myself in the process.

There’s a Greek proverb I come back to often:
A society grows great when people plant trees in whose shade they may never sit.

Year 6 felt like planting.
Year 7 feels like tending.

Life definitely hasn’t been easy, lately. Changed plans, Hospitals, Police, Tons of Unanswered Questions, and So Many Other Things.

But Dancing, Smiling, Laughing & Our Inside Jokes keep me going. You are my Best Friends. Thank you for everything.
