this painting really put me through the wringer (like all my eventual favorites do.) 😅 this was a very different process for me because I started with a vision that I was working toward, rather than my usual completely open ended intuitive style. I knew I wanted a dark garden scene of sorts, and I knew this would involve a lot of risks and new moves for me.

I think I FINALLY hit what I was going for…. A midnight garden that’s beautiful but slightly ominous, shining under the full moon. it’s rather wild to me that I’ve never ventured into depicting plants in any way in my work before. as some of you know, when I’m not in the studio I’m in my garden and it’s a huge part of my life @theartfulgardenernc

who knows if this is a one off occurrence or if I’ll play with this idea some more, but for now I’m just basking in the hard earned satisfaction of getting this piece to land where I wanted it. ☺️ oil on panel, 44” x 40.”

I know these early layers will change drastically over the course of making these new paintings. but had to take a moment to capture this first stage. I’ve never played around with an ombré color effect before and it’s definitely got me intrigued! 😮

this new big one is giving me all the chaotic vibes and warmth and electric energy of late summer. the color palette came out of a recent trip to the beach and the technicolor cotton candy-esque sunsets I saw there. 🌅 pink, peach, coral, blue….

of course I always think of my work as psychological landscapes and as autobiographical, so I suppose my inner state is this frazzled and frenetic. 🤔

I’m working toward a January show at @whitespace814 in Atlanta and it’s exciting to start envisioning some possible installation arrangements.

I’m really happy with this group of new 14” x 11” guys. lots of new imagery keeps popping up in the work. moons, suns, lightning bolts, organic drips and drops, 🌖 ☀️⚡️💧along with more varied and textured surfaces from scraping down into under layers, as well as some use of collage. can’t wait to see where this series continues to go!

I like the feel of this moody little nightscape. I’m always pleased and surprised when a moon shows up in my work. it happens periodically. I guess there’s a lunar cycle in studio life. 😏 oil and collage on panel. 14” x 11.”

the big new guys hanging out together in the studio. I’m noting it’s more blue than I’ve used in years. 🤖🧢🦋🪼💧

my last two big paintings have been real beasts. I’m no stranger to reworking paintings..it’s a regular and necessary part of my process. but this one and the last went through such a dramatic rollercoaster of complete overhauls in the eleventh hour, that I’m still kind of reeling a bit. not gonna lie, there’s that slightly masochistic, Philip Guston induced mentality of mine that you’ve got “to earn” a good painting, and that periods of them going to hell is just part of it. but mostly it’s about authenticity and letting the painting take the lead. it’s when I start pushing my will on it, tinkering, reining in, and forcing directions, that things fall apart. when I turn off the conscious brain and let my intuition lead again, the results prove far more sincere and engaging. after 30 years as a painter, it’s a lesson that needs constant reaffirmation. 😵‍💫

if you scroll over you’ll see the former “finished” life of this painting. I thought I was excited about the chaotic composition, the unusual color choices. turns out, after a few days of looking at in the studio, I was exhausted by it. that chaos wanted to be contained, to be unified into a singular form. which is typically how it goes with the larger paintings. they end up being what I think of as personified forms. basically a stand in for a figure…one who in true introvert fashion, has a layered and complex core contained inside an insulated calm exterior.

the last bit of background info on this painting is kinda cheesy. the metaphor is almost too perfect, too pat. over the last week I visited my friend and neighbor who raises caterpillars into beautiful monarch butterflies. I got to hold the newly transformed butterflies and watch them fly off, heading on their long journey to Mexico and Canada. maybe it’s no coincidence that the butterfly like form emerged in this painting. and it certainly resonated with me that things can go through some pretty gnarly stages of development till they reach their final evolution and most complete state of being. 🦋

ah, what doesn’t kill you in the studio makes you stronger…or crazier. 😵‍💫 or something like that. this painting was a beast and went through countless reworks. trying to balance bold but not too garish…abstract but still sonewhat narrative…emphatic but still nuanced. I don’t know. maybe I landed there, maybe I didn’t. but that’s all she wrote on this one 💀😅 and I think I’m pleased.
