Hello, I'm Michele, your soapmaker. I have over 30 years experience at making soap and am passionate about simple soap, done well.

Bruny Island Soap is:
🧼 made in Adventure Bay, Bruny Island, Tasmania,
🧼 sustainably made by me in small batches and long-cured,
🧼 quality minimal ingredients, thoughtfully chosen to serve a purpose in the soap,
🧼 pure essential oils, in simple combinations that don't overwhelm the senses and meaningful soap names that reflect the scent,
🧼 uncoloured or coloured with the subtle colours of cosmetic clays, chosen for their benefits,
🧼 hard and long-lasting,
🧼 high lather,
🧼 simply packaged allowing you to touch and smell the soap.

I don't use expensive essential oils or fancy packaging as I don't want to pass on needless costs to my customers. Likewise, I don't use expensive oils, butters or fillers that are better used in leave-on skincare. My soap is not embellished with unnecessary colours, decorations or patterns since the quiet quality speaks for itself.

Soap should be a simple and affordable, yet luxurious, and I am passionate about this.

I've been making soap for a very long time - over 30 years. Did you know that:

Necessity - I first learned to make soap as a teenager because all shop-bought soap irritated my skin.

Mistakes - I have ruined many batches of soap in order to become very good at what I do.

Teaching - I have helped a commercial soapmaker teach soapmaking classes. I love helping people learn about soap.

Soapmaker for an olive grove - I spent a few years making thousands of bars of olive oil soap for a large olive oil producer in Victoria. It was a thrill to see these in the supermarket.

Quirky soap - I've made soap out of many ingredients, from carrot juice to kombucha. But essentially soap is a cleaning product and is washed from the skin so it's best kept simple. by @brunyislandsoap

Always a picturesque trip to deliver soap to Ninapatina (@ninapatinametalworks) in Ranelagh, in the Huon Valley. Thankyou Nina for supporting a local small business and stopping a while to smell some soap with me today. by @brunyislandsoap

It's always a thrill getting a message from a customer saying how much they like my soap. Anne sent me a kind message this morning, which she's allowed me to share here. Thankyou so much Anne!

"Hi Michele, I visited your store at the markets last year, and bought a heap of your wonderful soap. I ran out a while ago, and have been using other random soaps. But they just wont do!!! Your soaps are the absolute best. I love them. Ive just purchased about a year's worth from Miss Arthur in New Norfolk, and they arrived this morning. Sanity has resumed! Thank you for your wonderful work, I'm very grateful indeed!

PS I even took one of the soaps on my Camino this year! Was an essential "treat" in my very strict packing list 🤣!" (Unedited full quote). by @brunyislandsoap

A community market is a reminder of connection, love, support and joy. It's not only a place for locals to meet over a cuppa and delicious food, it is so much more. There are hugs, smiles, tears, stories of joy or sadness to be shared. Regulars gather by the fire or out in the sunshine, dogs wag their tails, children run around.

Stallholders celebrate creative victories, commiserate disasters and encourage each other to keep going. We buy each other's wares as presents. Bountiful produce from vegie patches, flowers from gardens and home baked goods proudly grace tables.

Here are some beautiful things from todays Lunawanna Market, I hope you enjoy them as much as I did. See you in two weeks time xx by @brunyislandsoap

A beautiful collaboration between Bruny Island Soap and Fat Pig Farm (@fat_pig_farm) has been developing over a few months and has come to fruition.

Thankyou to Sadie and Matthew from Fat Pig Farm for asking me to make some soap with their own tallow. I'm yet to design a label, but can reveal the soap is scented with lemon myrtle.

A lovely lunch today at Fat Pig Farm, where the sample soap was well-received. Sadie looks like she's about to eat it, doesn't she? Delivery of the cured soap will be in a few weeks time, and you'll be able to buy it in the farm shop.

Tallow brings hardness, longevity and great lather to soap. It's also sustainable, especially in this case where the tallow used comes from the farm. Its so lovely to have been given the opportunity to make such a special soap. by @brunyislandsoap

Remember how I had a go at helping make soap dishes a few weeks ago? They're out of the kiln!

In case you missed it, I helped my friend Tanya (@mclachlan_troup_ceramics) make some of the soap dishes I sell at markets. We had a lovely time in her studio and I learnt a lot about the time-consuming process of making the dishes.

After I helped, the dishes air-dried, were fired, glazed, then bisque fired. So they are now ready! I will have the dishes that I helped make for sale at upcoming Lunawanna and Kingston markets. A beautiful soap dish and a soap make a wonderful present. by @brunyislandsoap

Bruny Island Soap has a new stockist in Northern Tasmania.

Into the Thicket (@into_the_thicket) is a new art-based shop and fibre studio in Invermay, Launceston. It features work by local artists, creators and makers.

Thankyou to owner Selki for choosing to stock my soap at Into the Thicket and to Meg (@megmjacobs) for popping in for a look and to take some photos for me. by @brunyislandsoap

Community markets are special places. My first market was a bit overwhelming and scary. I never thought I would be doing markets given that I am introverted and shy. But now they are my happy place, who would have thought!

Being passionate about my product and understanding all the details of how I make my soap is key. I stand behind my product and am keen to answer any questions or help my customers choose the right soap.

It was a lovely Lunawanna Market today - a sunny spring day put a smile on everyone's face.

You can find me at Lunawanna Market on Bruny Island on the first and third Sunday of the month and Kingston Beach Market on the second Sunday of the month. Plus I have 25 stockists around Tasmania. I can also mail soap if you get in touch with me. by @brunyislandsoap
