This interaction with @paulgilbert_official has been playing in my head on loop.🔁 *moments after @mrbig_music finished their soundcheck and we went up on stage to do ours

me: *takes a deep breath* Hey Paul!
Paul: Heyyy, nice guitar!
me: Here, you can have it *hands out the @suhrcustom *
Paul: You can have mine! *hands out the @officialibanezguitars *
Us: Picture? Yes🤘🏼
Paul shakes my hand and suddenly there’s a plectrum of his in my hand.
me: Woops, you accidentally gave me your pick
He: No, that’s yours now, have a great show.
me: THANK YOU!😭 *while trying to do suryanamaskara and cartwheels out of gratitude because I got so awkward * 🧘🏻‍♀️🤸🏼‍♀️🌞

I tried. I tried very hard to explain to him what he’s meant to me over the years. How his mere existence and presence in Rock Music has given me hope all along. His instructional videos, his quirks on the guitar, his earth shattering vibrato, I mean, he’s the reason why we do this isn’t it? He and his contemporaries. They represent Rock. They are Rock. I couldn’t fathom me being there on the same stage as him.
So I tried to tell him all of this, but I fumbled. The words wouldn’t come out. I couldn’t even speak English properly in his presence. And it’s so ironic, because I can yap all day. But I simply shook his hand, poured out my gratitude through my eyes, and went on to finish what he started, play the guitar.

I’ve always felt a sense of responsibility each time I’ve played music. The responsibility of honouring my heroes and the art form itself, the responsibility of honouring the fans who show up. Isn’t it insane that we get to flirt with music? Manipulate it in a way that people who listen to it are inspired, moved, elated in its presence. Ah! May we all realise our role with art, to elevate it at all times. The music will always be bigger than us.

Thank you Paul for showing us the way. Thank you for inspiring me to pick up my first Ibanez and go after your sounds for years, allowing me to play music all of my life. My journey with music is a tribute to people like you, and to all the people who did it before me. Thank you for giving me a dream.🫂❤️ #paulgilbert #mrbig by @brydenlewis
