Gday legends here’s a place dedicated to the hand carved spoons I like creating :)

POSTS STORIES REELS

Hello folks,
What an honour it was to make this spatula out of the incredibly rare “Koolai” (as known to the Awabakal people) or “Wutabang” (as known to the Worimi people). This old growth piece was incredible to carve. Here’s a little to know for those who care to read on!
This beautiful wood comes from subtropical forests through northern new south whales and Queensland. It can grow up to 60 meters tall, and is one of Australia’s only deciduous trees. When colonists arrived 1739 it was logged to commercial extinction over a 150 year period and turned into buildings and furniture. It was highly valued by the capitalist west because of its porous wood which meant it dried without cracking, (Therefore could dry quickly). It was also very easy to work with and was both strong and flexible. Fuck those greedy bastards hey.
Another thing to know is that it is a very resonant wood. After chatting to an awesome luthier who resides at the base of mount dandenong, I discovered that it is the perfect wood for guitar necks 🤯!! This wood is so cool and so hard to come by. So thanks to my father @mattmartin2023 for having the keen eye of a carpenter and spotting out the (red cedar ewww how much worse is that as a name compared to the two above!!!) from an old cabinet! And thanks for letting me carve it!!
Ps the chopping board is also out of Koolai! Isn’t the shiny chatoyant grain just mesmerising? It has such graceful patterns.

Brown boulders on the hill
The wind is strong but the tree is still
Cast in shadow is the ground
Around the tree is where I’m found

Why is it so easy to procrastinate when there’s a Huon pine spoon that needs finishing?

This spoon was incredibly fun to carve. It is one of my first functional spoons — it has a little wave on it for all the surfers out there which can also be used as a hook for hanging the spoon, and it fits perfectly in the hand. On top of that, the grain turned out stunningly after a good sand and oil. I hope you guys like it! by @bryniesspoonsies

Another tear drop outa Kauri pine created last year for some very dear friends of mine.

Here is the result of my most recent spoon carving endeavour, which has now taken a home with a very good family friend of mine. I do not know what the wood is but it was a fun carve.

Here’s a teardrop spoon I carved near the start of the year. I used an old piece of cowry pine similar to the one shown in the last shot. From what I know Cowry pine is known for being reasonably malleable and having almost water proof properties, making it excellent for cooking utensils, and building.

This spoon I carved out of a slightly bug eaten piece of olive wood.

This spoon I carved out of a piece of Banksia, which I got from a tree located in one of my favourite places on earth.

Here’s a spoon I carved about a month back. It is made out of a branch taken from a beautiful, gnarled cypress tree in Raak Plain Boinka.
