Think about it Thursday! The Hidden Impact of Pet Food Insecurity * The Bond Prevails: For many individuals experiencing poverty or homelessness, a pet is their primary source of emotional support and unconditional love. This deep bond drives them to prioritize their pet’s well-being over their own health. * Human-Animal Share: When specialized pet food isn’t available, owners frequently share their own meals, which can sometimes lead to nutritional deficiencies for both the human and the animal. * Economic Trade-offs: Choosing pet food over rent, utilities, or transportation dramatically increases the risk of housing instability and missed medical appointments for the owner. * Surrender Risks: A lack of access to affordable pet food is one of the leading reasons families are forced to surrender their beloved pets to local animal shelters. If you’re in Luzerne County, PA and you or someone you know is struggling to afford pet food please visit https://bandletlivproject.org/maxsmeals Any where else there are local and national resources offering free pet food, affordable veterinary services, and financial assistance for pet expenses. https://www.humaneworld.org/en/resources/having-trouble-affording-your-pet Please support our mission to bridge the gap between human & animal welfare! Think about it Thursday! When people fall on hard times, their pets feel it too. Millions of pet owners in the U.S. live in poverty, and one of the leading reasons animals are surrendered to shelters is financial strain — including rental restrictions, vet bills, pet food costs, and unexpected emergencies. Think about it Thursday! A dog muzzle is a positive tool that provides safety, reduces stress, and prevents dangerous incidents when used and introduced properly. A muzzle is a positive, proactive tool because it serves as an essential safety net that protects dogs, owners, and the public while preventing stressful situations from escalating. Despite the common stereotype that muzzles are only for “bad” or aggressive dogs, dog behaviorists and veterinarians view them as a responsible measure for a wide range of positive outcomes. Kenny was rescued from a critical situation and understandably has trust issues with many humans. Kenny wants to love and be loved, his muzzle allow this to happen and helps removes any anxiety of fear from any situation, so Kenny can be the dog he deserves to be. Think about it Thursday! Mental enrichment is essential for shelter dogs; it actively counteracts stress, anxiety, and behavioral deterioration caused by kennel confinement while building the emotional resilience needed for successful adoption! Why Dogs Need Brain Games * Less Stress: Cages make dogs very anxious and sad. * Better Focus: Mental tasks tire dogs out in a good way. * Easier Adoptions: Calm, happy dogs find homes faster. https://www.aspcapro.org/topics-shelter-behavior/canine-enrichment-shelter-dogs Please support our mission to bridge the gap between human & animal welfare! Think about it Thursday! Autumn is officially here! The main thing to be concerned about with leaves and leaf piles is mold growth. While leaves from most trees are not a big deal by themselves, leaves that develop mold can cause severe neurological issues in dogs when consumed. Fall conditions can make it easy for mold to develop on a pile of decaying leaves. When that mold forms, it can produce tremorgenic mycotoxins, which are very toxic to dogs and can cause neurological issues such as body tremors and seizures if ingested. Dogs who ingest moldy leaves typically start showing signs of poisoning within a few hours. These cases often require a visit to the vet because the poisoning is typically treated with injectable and prescription medications, according to Schmid. (Link below) If a dog consumes leaves that are not moldy, they will be fine in most cases, aside from some minor stomach upset. They can also risk developing an obstruction if they eat a large quantity of leaves and have trouble passing them. https://www.thesprucepets.com/what-autumn-outdoor-items-are-toxic-for-dogs-6823954 Please support our mission to bridge the gap between human & animal welfare! Think about it Thursday! Volunteering to read to shelter pets is deeply beneficial! Reading can lower an animal’s anxiety, speed up adoption times, and can also help adults & children in therapy with a safe, non-judgmental space to practice reading aloud. It’s well documented that reading to young children helps calm them when they are restless, instills a greater sense of wellbeing, and enhances bonding between reader and child. Shelter dogs enjoy many of those same positive benefits when human volunteers read to them or when audiobooks are played in a kennel environment. https://www.fearfreehappyhomes.com/reading-to-shelter-pets-can-lower-stress-improve-adoption-chances/ Please support our mission to bridge the gap between human & animal welfare!
