Once a year, thousands of people gather in the desert to create Black Rock City, a temporary town dedicated to community, art, and self-expression.

Cleavage In Space by Rosanna Scimica. The theme for 2003’s Burning Man was Beyond Belief, a reference to theism, and this installation represents a heavenly chandelier that fell to earth.

Making an appearance at Burning Man 2016, the Sonic Runway is a light-art installation you can bike or walk through. The installation converts audio signals into a pattern of lights down the corridor of arches timed to the music.

Over a hundred weddings happen each year at Burning Man. Each is phenomenally creative, but this one caught my eye in particular. How joyful, festive, and meaningful is this wedding?? Congratulations, and much hope and love to your futures! Photo provided by @nicetesia

One of my favorite things about Burning Man is its openness to newcomers. New experiences can be intimidating. An unfamiliar community can make you feel lonely, unsophisticated, undesired. But a core value of Burning Man is radical inclusivity. Burners not only welcome newcomers, they’re genuinely excited for those experiencing their first Burn. They’ll dress you, they’ll feed you, they’ll gift things to you. There’s even a little ritual just for newbies. #nospoilers
