The truth about pediatric heart scans? It’s the little surprises no one warned you about that can be overwhelming. 🫀🏥 Between the gel, having to take off your shirt, stickers being placed on the chest, and lying still while having your heart checked from four different angles… An echocardiogram can feel like a lot for children and their grown-ups! My Heart Scan was written to help take out the surprises! Replacing unknown sensory information with knowledge of what to expect. Parents, caregivers, previous patients, and healthcare workers: What caught you or your little one off guard during the echo? Tell us in the comments below! 👇🏽 📖 My Heart Scan is available worldwide via Amazon, Bookshop.org, and through major book retailers. Click on the link in our bio to grab your copy for home or your local clinic! #congenitalheartdefects #chdcommunity #medicalmom #childlife #burrowbooksco by @burrow.books
Every single day, a child’s heart beats over 100,000 times! During an echocardiogram, our job is to make sure we don’t miss a single beat 🫀✨ Today is #WorldHeartDay and this year’s theme is a powerful reminder: don’t miss a beat. In pediatric cardiac imaging, that means looking with great attention to detail at every chamber, valve, and vessel to safeguard a child’s future. But over the years at the bedside, I realized that while our machines don’t miss a physical beat, our healthcare systems often miss the emotional ones like the little human behind the scan who is frightened by the cold gel, stickers, and dark rooms. True heart care isn’t just about clinical precision. It’s about making sure our young patients feel safe, seen, and empowered in their own bodies! This is why I founded Burrow Books Co. and wrote our debut picture book, My Heart Scan. Today, we honor the resilient cardiac kids, tireless families, and the imaging teams dedicated to catching every detail, every beat. 📚 My Heart Scan is officially available. Worldwide today on Amazon, Bookshop.org, and through global book retailers! Together, let’s never miss a beat for their hearts and their peace of mind! 🫀✨ #congenitalheartdefects #echocardiogram #childlife #chdawareness by @burrow.books
Translating clinical equipment into gentle, magical artwork is no easy task. Today, we’re spotlighting the incredible artist who brought My Heart Scan to life, Christina Michalos! ✨ From initial character sketches to the intricate details that make each character, she poured so much empathy, warmth, and care into each page. Here’s a bit about Christina: Christina Michalos is a UK-born, award-winning children’s book illustrator who specialises in the enchanting world of watercolour and mixed media. In the past decade, she has collaborated with over 15 traditional publishing houses and 50 self-published authors worldwide. The majority of books she has illustrated have achieved international retail distribution, including but not limited to Waterstones, Walmart, Barnes & Noble, Foyles UK, Saxo Denmark, First Book Canada, and Strand Bookstores in Broadway, NY. Medical tools don’t have to be mystery objects 🔍 When we use cutesy euphemisms for medical equipment, we miss an opportunity to build trust. Calling tools by their names and offering sensory explanations can help children make sense of what’s happening to their bodies. Without plain language, medical visits can feel overwhelming. And when kids don’t understand their care, they lose the ability to speak up, ask questions, or process their experiences. Navigating medical experiences and managing your health is hard enough. Let’s simplify the journey by offering clear, honest explanations! Save this post for your next clinic visit, or comment below about a tool you have a hard time explaining to your little one 💬 #medicalmoms #childlife #childlifeessentials #childrensbooks #pediatriccare by @burrow.books
“Don’t cry, be a big boy/girl.” We hear this statement all the time in medical spaces, but true bravery has nothing to do with hiding our feelings. Crying, asking questions, needing a hand to hold, or simply taking a deep breath inside an exam room is bravery in its purest form. As clinicians, parents, and caregivers, when we give children permission to feel scared, we give them the tools to build real, lasting resilience. To every little patient showing up today and everyday: You are doing hard things and you are so, so brave! Drop a heart below if you’ve been brave by simply showing up! 💚 Whether that’s showing up for yourself or for a resilient little in your life. #childlife #pediaticcare #medicalfamilies #burrowbooksco #resilientkids by @burrow.books
Meet Aliyah! A pediatric cardiac sonographer and the founder of Burrow Books Co.! 🫀 Through her work as a pediatric cardiac sonographer (heart ultrasound specialist), Aliyah has served diverse patient populations across the United States and United Kingdom. In her daily practice, common themes quickly became clear: medical environments can be intimidating, families often struggle to fully understand their care plan and health pathway, and children deeply need safe and accessible resources to learn about their care. Stepping away from the probe, Aliyah founded Burrow Books Co. on one core belief: No child should ever be a stranger to their own health. Medical experiences can feel overwhelming for the whole family, but when we empower our youngest patients, we build a foundation of trust that lasts a lifetime. 👉🏽Swipe through to learn a little more about our founder and her clinical roots! We are so happy you’re here to help us build this burrow. 🌿Read more about Burrow Books Co. and our mission at burrowbooks.org – and drop a comment below if you believe healthcare should never be a scary unknown! #pediatrichealthliteracy #medicalfamilies #childrensbooks #heartwarrior #childrenspublishing by @burrow.books
