Papa Dessalines Jacques I, Emperor of Hayti Governor General Jean-Jacques Dessalines General Jean-Jacques Dessalines October 17, 1806…is Assasinated. Dessalines in his own words… “I Have Avenged America” June 12, 1804 “…It were better for them that the sea received them into its profound abyss, than to be devoured by the anger of the children of Hayti. “War and Death to Tyrants!” this is my motto; “Liberty! Independence!” this is our rallying cry Generals, officers, soldiers, similar to him who has preceded me, he ex-general TOUSSAINT LOUVERTURE, I have been faithful to the promise which I made to you when I took up arms against tyranny, and whilst the last spark of life remains in me I shall keep my oath. Never again shall a colonist or an European set his foot upon this territory with the title of master or proprietor. This resolution shall henceforward form the fundamental basis of our constitution. Should other chiefs, after me, by pursuing a conduct diametrically opposite to mine, dig their own graves and those of their species, you will have to accuse only the law of destiny which shall have taken me away from the happiness and welfare of my fellow-citizens. May my successors follow the path I shall have traced out for them! It is the system best adapted for consolidating their power; it is the highest homage they can render to my memory…” Remember those who failed alongside him on that day like “Charlotin Marcadieu” Mèsi Onè… Respè 🖼️ @akomicsart 💼 @bvstylez #JeanJacquesDessalines #Dessalines #Haiti #Ayiti #BelleVueTours by @bvstylez
“As for General Capoix’s valiant service as the hero of Vertières, Dessalines wrote, “General Capoix, after having had his horse killed under him, conserved, as long as the action lasted, his sangfroid and such a level head that he was admired by the army and won praise from his enemies, and in particular from General Rochambeau, who, a spectator of the attack on Vertières, did not see him for a single moment abandon the ground he gained from the enemy.” The Battle of Vertières, which ended on November 18, 1803, effectively destroyed the Leclerc-Rochambeau expedition to bring back slavery.” Sadly Christophe wrote to the emperor on October 11, 1806, “His Excellence Division General Paul Romain and His Excellence Brigadier General Dartiguenave executed your orders yesterday at six in the evening,” adding, “Capoix’s three aides-de-camp are here, in the city, awaiting Your Majesty’s orders.” “The aides-de-camp were there, but not their commander, Division General François Capoix, whom Christophe had previously ordered to appear. No one evidently saw or heard from Capoix after October 10.” October’s Lessons… Text: 📕 THE FIRST AND LAST KING OF HAITI: THE RISE AND FALL OF HENRY CHRISTOPHE by Marlene Daut @fictionsofhaiti 🖼️ No. 2 @akomicsart 🖼️ No. 5 📕 by Jean-Hérold Pérard “Le Cap-Haïtien 350 ans d'histoire 1670-2020” #CapoixLaMort #Haiti #HaitianHistory #BelleVueTours by @bvstylez
After falling ill and paralyzed while attending Mass in the Church of St. Anne in Limonade on August 15, 1820, King Henry committed suicide on October 8th. If we let others tell his story, you will hear Megalomania and so much worst by his former supporters from the Kingdom of Hayti* (Juste Chanlatte) and others after his death. For us Kapwaz his name has become a noun so we are sometimes referred as Christophien & Christophienne because to us He Was Creative, Ingenious, Enterprising, Innovative, and a Visionary Leader who left us not one but many symbols and testimony to what we as a people can accomplish. Owning Our Narrative on the anniversary of his death we choose to honor him for the rich legacy he left Haïti and the world. “...He understood that pride was not a mere matter of words he saw the need for sweeping symbols with the Citadelle. Christophe bought the soul of the Haitian people to its proper and great heights. He built a monument that preserve hard won freedoms and transcend the ages...” After the published ordinance on April 9th, 1804 requiring each general in their commanding departments to fortify their area by building forts on the highest mountains by Governor-General of Hayti Jean-Jacques Dessalines, then General Henry Christophe until his death, engaged in the construction of the following which now gives him the title “Builder King”: 1. Fort Rivière & Fort Neuf above the town of Grande-Rivière 2. Fort Dahomey in Camp-Coq near Limbé on the peak of LaSouffrière 3. Fort des Bayonnais above Ennery 4. Fort Sans-Quartier, Fort Brave, Fort Jalousière aka (Redoutable) in the mountains of Marmelade 5. Fort Béké In the hills above Saint-Marc 6. Forts Delpèche and Drouet, On the Mattheux above the plain of Arcahaie 7. Citadelle Henry and four others in the hills of Ramiers On October 18th President Jean-Pierre Boyer executed many of his supporters, including his sons - Jacques Victor-Henry Christophe (Prince Victor) and - Eugène Christophe (Prince Eugène) As well as King Henry’s Secretary and one of Hayti’s powerful early historians Jean-Louis, “The Baron” de Vastey #HenryChristophe #Haiti #HaitianHistory #BelleVueTours by @bvstylez
Henry Christophe response to Leclerc’s letter in February 1802, when Leclerc demanded entry into the port of Cap-Français, present-day Cap-Haïtien. This was the largest military expedition ever to sail from France, sent with the intention of restoring slavery in Saint-Domingue, present-day Haïti. Translation: “I have the honor of informing you, that I cannot deliver the forts placed under my command but I’m awaiting orders from governor Toussaint Louverture. I have sent a messenger to announce him of your arrival with the french army. Until I receive those orders, I cannot let you disembark. And if you have the strength to threaten me, I will categorically resist . And If force favors you, you will not enter the city of Cap until I reduce it to ashes and on those same ashes I will fight you.” Soon after General Christophe ordered Cap-Français burned to the ground.
