Sometimes, the simplest words say the most. This week we're celebrating this lovely 5⭐ review from Sabine in Germany, who recently welcomed one of our extra-large handwoven laundry baskets into her home. "Der Korb ist einfach nur toll!" "The basket is simply great!" Thank you so much, Sabine. 💚 Our laundry baskets are more than just practical storage. Each one is handwoven using traditional techniques by talented women living alongside Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwest Uganda. From sorting laundry and storing blankets to keeping children's toys tidy, these baskets are designed to become part of everyday family life—while supporting another family on the other side of the world. It's always a privilege to know that something made with such care has found a new home. Thank you to everyone who chooses handmade and helps create opportunities through every purchase. 🧺 What would you use one of our large baskets for? Laundry, blankets, toys... or something completely different? We'd love to hear your ideas! 🛍️ Discover our collection via the link in our bio. 💚 Every purchase has a story. Motivation into the weekend "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." – African Proverb This has to be one of our favourite African proverbs—and one that perfectly captures why Bwindi Handmade Crafts exists. When our weaving partners come together each week, they don't simply make baskets. They share ideas. They encourage one another. They dye grasses together, develop new designs and work as a team to complete larger orders that would be difficult to achieve alone. Over the years, we've seen that working together doesn't just make the work easier—it makes everyone stronger. The same is true for us. We've never wanted to be a brand that simply sells products. We'd much rather build lasting relationships—with our artisan partners in Uganda, with independent retailers who believe in handmade craftsmanship, and with customers who choose to buy with purpose. Every collaboration, every new stockist and every purchase helps another story travel a little further. So today we'd like to say thank you to everyone who has been part of that journey so far. We're grateful to partners like @thepopupclub_, @fachl_celle, @karakorum_ethical_decor and @weltladencelle, who believe that independent businesses can achieve more by supporting one another. Together really is better. 💚 💬 Who is someone whose support has helped you "go further" in life? Tag them below or tell us why you're grateful for them. We'd love to celebrate them with you. 📷: @hippolytus1308 #MidweekMotivation #AfricanProverb #BetterTogether #SupportArtisans #WomenEmpowerment #HandmadeWithPurpose #EthicalShopping #PeoplePlanetPurpose #communityovercompetition #ShopSmall #FairTradeCrafts #bwindihandmadecrafts by @bwindihandmadecrafts
This week we'd love you to meet Gladys. 💚 Gladys was born inside Bwindi Forest, a place she still remembers with great affection. Today, she is a wife, a mother of four and one of the talented women creating beautiful handwoven baskets for Bwindi Handmade Crafts. Without land of her own to farm, Gladys turned to weaving as a way to provide for her family. What began as an accessible source of income has become something much bigger. Every basket she weaves helps put food on the table, contributes towards healthcare costs and brings her one step closer to her dream of owning land, building a permanent home and keeping livestock. Like many members of the Batwa community, Gladys misses aspects of life in the forest. But she also believes deeply in conservation, recognising the opportunities that protecting Bwindi has created for future generations—including education for her children. Her story is one of resilience, hope and looking forward while honouring the past. Every basket she creates carries that story with it. 💬 If you could ask Gladys one question about her life or her weaving, what would it be? We'd love to share your questions with her. 🛍️ To discover baskets handcrafted by women like Gladys, visit our Etsy shop via the link in our bio. 💚 Every maker has a story. Thank you for helping us share it. 📷: @hippolytus1308 #meetthemakers #womenempowerment #supportartisans #handwoven #basketweaving #direckttrade #EthicalShopping #consciousconsumerism #Uganda #Batwa #PeoplePlanetPurpose #BwindiImpenetrableNationalPark #handmadewithpurpose #bwindihandmadecrafts by @bwindihandmadecrafts

In our last post, we shared how every one of our hand-carved gorillas begins life as a simple block of wood, gradually revealing its own unique character through the skill and creativity of the artisan. Today, we're smiling from ear to ear after reading this wonderful 5⭐ review from Ashley in the USA, who clearly spotted exactly what makes each gorilla so special. 🦍 "These gorillas are superb! They are beautifully carved and definitely capture the spirit of these magnificent animals. Their expressive faces are wonderful. These carvings would be sure to please anyone who loves gorillas! Customer service was excellent." Thank you so much, Ashley, for your kind words. One of our favourite things about our wood carvings is that no two gorillas are ever exactly alike. Each one reflects not only the individuality of the mountain gorillas that inspired it, but also the personality, creativity and craftsmanship of the artisan who carved it by hand. When you choose one of our gorillas, you're bringing home more than a beautiful piece of art. You're supporting skilled artisans, helping create sustainable livelihoods for communities bordering Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and celebrating the wildlife that makes this corner of Uganda so extraordinary. 💚 Every gorilla has a story. We'd love to help you find yours. 🛍️ Browse our collection via the Etsy shop link in our bio. 💬 Tell us in the comments: If you could name your own wooden gorilla, what would you call it? 🦍👇 #FeedbackFriday #CustomerLove #EtsyReview #HandCarved #WoodCarving #MountainGorillas #GorillaConservation #SupportArtisans #HandmadeWithPurpose #EthicalShopping #FairTradeCrafts #Uganda #AfricanArt #ShopSmall #GiftWithMeaning #ConsciousConsumer #BwindiImpenetrableNationalPark #BwindiHandmadeCrafts by @bwindihandmadecrafts
"Within every block of wood there dwells a spirit, waiting to be released. Direct carving is a way of freeing the spirit – that of the carver and that of the wood." Every one of our wooden gorillas begins exactly like this. Not as a finished sculpture, but as a simple block of locally sourced wood. The first stage is what our lead carver, Kasule, calls the sketch. Armed with only a panga (the local name for a machete), he carefully chips away at the wood until the first outline of the gorilla begins to emerge. At this point, you won't yet see every detail—but Kasule already does. As the carving progresses, each gorilla gradually reveals its own character. No two are ever the same. Just like the mountain gorillas that inspire them, every piece has its own unique expression, shaped not only by the wood itself but also by the creativity, skill and personality of the artisan bringing it to life. Perhaps that's why handmade pieces feel so different. They carry something of the maker within them. For us, this quote is about more than carving wood. It's about recognising the potential waiting to be discovered—in natural materials, in traditional craftsmanship, and in the talented people who transform both into something extraordinary. 💬 What do you notice first when you look at this "sketch"? Can you already see the gorilla taking shape? We'd love to hear what catches your eye. 🦍 If you'd like to see the finished carvings—and the stories behind the artisans who make them—visit our Etsy shop via the link in our bio. Hello to our new followers — and a warm welcome back to everyone who has been part of our journey so far. 💛 We thought this was the perfect time to (re)introduce ourselves and the incredible artisans, coffee farmers and community partners who make Bwindi Handmade Crafts what it is. What began in 2014 as a small community project in southwest Uganda has grown into a network of talented makers and growers creating opportunities through craft, coffee and conservation. Today, we work with women weavers, seamstresses, wood carvers and coffee producers living alongside Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — home to the endangered mountain gorilla. Together, we're helping to create sustainable income opportunities that support families, strengthen communities and contribute to conservation efforts. Every basket woven. Every apron stitched. Every bag of coffee roasted. Each one tells a story of skill, resilience and hope. Over the coming weeks we'll be introducing more of the amazing people behind the products, sharing their stories, their talents and the impact that your support makes possible. 🛍️ If you'd like to explore our collection of handmade crafts and purpose-driven gifts, you'll find our Etsy shop via the link in our bio. 💬 We'd love to get to know you too! Tell us below: How did you first discover Bwindi Handmade Crafts? Thank you for being part of our story. 🌿 People. Planet. Purpose. This week we're sending a huge thank you to Felicity from the UK for her wonderful 5⭐ review after welcoming one of our hand-carved wooden gorillas into her home. ✨ " I was so glad to discover this shop after an unfortunate incident involving my dog and a souvenir I’d picked up on my travels. The service was excellent, and I really appreciated being able to choose my own replacement. It’s especially meaningful to know that the money goes back into supporting the community I visited. Opening the box was a lovely experience too - I enjoyed finding the paper slip that told me who had handcrafted my piece. Thank you." Moments like these remind us why we do what we do. Every gorilla is carefully hand-carved by one of our talented artisans in southwest Uganda. Every order helps create sustainable income opportunities for communities living alongside Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. And every parcel includes the story of the maker behind your purchase—because we believe knowing who made your craft is just as important as the craft itself. Thank you, Felicity, for choosing handmade, for supporting our partners, and for giving a gorilla a new home. 🦍💚 If you're looking for a meaningful gift—or a keepsake with a story—visit our Etsy shop via the link in our bio. 💬 We'd love to know... "Carving is a source of joy to the artist... To attack the raw material, gradually to extract a shape out of it following one's own desire, or, sometimes, the inspiration of the material itself." There's something deeply satisfying about creating with your own hands. A simple piece of wood becomes something entirely new—not through machines or mass production, but through patience, skill and imagination. This week's quote reminds us that craftsmanship is as much about the journey as the finished piece. Every cut, every detail and every decision reflects the maker's experience and creativity. The photograph features Kasule, our lead wood carver in southwest Uganda. Inspired by the wildlife and landscapes surrounding Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Kasule and his apprentices transform locally sourced timber into beautifully detailed gorillas and other handcrafted pieces that carry a story of conservation and entrepreneurship far beyond the workshop. When you choose handmade, you're not just buying an object—you're celebrating the time, talent and tradition behind it. 💬 We'd love to hear from you... Do you enjoy making things with your own hands? Whether it's woodworking, knitting, painting, gardening or baking, tell us what brings you joy. 📷: @hippolytus1308 #BwindiHandmadeCrafts #HandmadeWithPurpose #SupportArtisans #EconomicEmpowerment #PeoplePlanetPurpose #MidweekMotivation #WoodCarving #MeetTheMaker #Craftsmanship #SlowMade #EthicalShopping #Uganda #Bwindi #GorillaConservation #madewithlove by @bwindihandmadecrafts
