Mom, baby and the hopeful male…

A little info about Humpback Whale escorts: a male traveling alongside a mother and calf pair is known as an ‘escort.’ Even though it might look like a family unit, he is not the dad and his role is actually competitive. He is protecting the female from other males in hopes of becoming her next mate.

While I was recording this on the drone this song came to mind.

The sheer size of mom’s underwater wings.
It’s weird because I always think the calves are so big when I photograph them on their own but once we have mom in the frame for scale you can see just how big she is in comparison. Her pectoral fins are easily a third of her body length. I am so enamoured by these animals it never gets old watching them

So powerful yet only a few weeks old. This baby humpback whale with some gorgeous white pectorals enjoying his/her migration down the coast. These whales are just so gorgeous to photograph

A full explosion from this humpback whale calf. Was very close to shore having fun with mum while making his/her way south via Sydney

Baby humpback whale learning to breach just off the Sydney coast. This little one was so white underneath. Could watch them jump all day which wouldn’t be hard because the calves do it so much on their way south. Sydney has so many moms and calves passing through the last while.

White bellied beaut exploding from the water. Such a gorgeous humpback whale. These southern hemisphere whales have such gorgeous white colouring on their underside and they LOVE to breach.

New baby lion cub in the pride. Mom/lioness was very close by. Do you see his little brown spots on his legs? He will lose them as he gets older and they will be fully gone once he is an adult

An evening spent surrounded by Hippos 🦛

This is pretty much my idea of a perfect evening. Loads of baby hippos as well as adults. I didn’t know where to look as there was just as much on land as there was in the water by @by_brona

Hippo - the real king of the bush.
The deadliest and coolest animal in Africa. Such beauties. These guys can open their jaws to an amazing 150-degree angle and have a crushing bite force. Got some young ones fighting for territory in the third slide.
