We arrived after dark and hardly know where we are, but camp setup is easy and we feel cozy. All four of us fit in the back of our Go Fast Camper topper. Potstickers and rice for dinner.

Tomorrow we’re headed into Eureka and the redwoods, then taking the scenic Highway 101 up toward Newport on our way back to Portland. It’s one of my favorite carefree drives, where extra driving time is a blessing instead of a curse.

Chandler hasn’t finished my sweater yet, so when I put it on to see how it fit, I felt like I was wearing a crop top. I had to smoke my tobacco pipe to compensate for my masculinity. This weekend we got our first taste of camping below freezing, with frost on the ground in the morning, plus some of the first rain we’re going to have to get used to.

Finally spent more than one night in the same spot. After being so mesmerized by this Mount Hood overlook, we dedicated a whole weekend to camping out and catching up on our thoughts. Below-freezing nights and our first taste of the rainy Pacific Northwest season ahead.

Chandler has always been the main character. I’m the comic relief. But we’re definitely surviving until the end. by @bygrantmitchell

Blackbeard Fire Plugs. Ranger thinks it’s a treat, but don’t worry, I didn’t let him have one.

I’ve been using their products for years. I’ve tried dozens of different fire starters, homemade and purchased. Either they’re too bulky, too expensive, or too hard to keep dry.

These plugs are:

1. Cheap
2. Lightweight
3. Easy to store

Damn, that’s it right there. The moment, the place.

Sometimes what you think you want, and how you envision it, can be a bit of a letdown when you get there.

This is not. Not this life, not this truck and topper, not this moment, camping. It’s all come together for this.
