Ever wondered what it's like to be a Wine and Viticulture student at Cal Poly? Our interdisciplinary program combines viticulture (grape growing), enology (winemaking), and wine business to provide a comprehensive education. With our Learn by Doing approach, students gain hands-on experience in our 14-acre vineyard and state-of-the-art JUSTIN and J. LOHR Center for Wine and Viticulture. Whether you're interested in cultivating vineyards, crafting wines, or managing wine businesses, our program prepares you for a dynamic career in the wine industry. Check out a day in the life of a Wine and Viticulture major and see how we blend passion with profession! #CalPolyGrown by @calpolywvit

Is that blood?! 🩸🧛‍♀️ Nope, just Cabernet Franc! 🍷 Things are getting spooky in our Wine Sensory Lab this Halloween! 👻 Our Wine Sensory Lab Technician, Biljana Petrova, has been documenting the color evolution of Cabernet Franc throughout fermentation, photographing samples each day to capture how the wine’s appearance changes over time! From a single stunning shot to a side-by-side look at the entire fermentation process, Biljana’s photography gives us a unique glimpse into the science (and beauty!) behind winemaking. Huge shoutout to Biljana for her incredible photography skills! Be sure to check out more of her scary good photos @biljana.p 😰📸 Happy Halloween from Cal Poly Wine and Viticulture! 🦇🍷 #calpolywineandvit #calpoly #learnbydoing #winescience #halloween by @calpolywvit
Ciao d’Italia! 🇮🇹🍷 Our Wine and Viticulture students are taking their education abroad! Third-year students Samantha Murphy, Bella Reeves, and Vivian Ceaser are currently studying abroad in Florence, Italy, where they’ve had the opportunity to experience the Italian wine industry firsthand! As part of their Wine Marketing course, the three students were treated to an exclusive tour of the historic Castello Nipozzano Frescobaldi Estate, organized by their wine marketing professor, Diletta Frescobaldi. During their visit, they explored the estate’s vineyards and cellar before enjoying a guided tasting!  Big thank you to Samantha, Bella, and Vivian for sharing a glimpse of their adventures with us! From San Luis Obispo to the vineyards of Tuscany, Learn by Doing knows no borders! ✈️ #calpolywineandvit #calpoly #learnbydoing #studyabroad #italianwine by @calpolywvit

Keep your eyes peeled for Wine and Vit at the airport! 👀✈️🍷 If you’re ever flying out of the SLO County Airport, you might spot a couple of familiar faces on Cal Poly’s Learn by Doing poster! And no, they’re not models (though they could be! 😉). That’s our very own Professor Dr. Federico Casassa and master’s student Julissa Preciado! The best part? Neither of them even knew their photo was being used for Cal Poly advertising! Talk about a surprise celebrity moment! 🌟 Show our Wine and Vit airport celebrities some love in the comments! 💚💛 #calpoly #calpolywineandvit #learnbydoing #sloairport #calpolyproud by @calpolywvit
Yesterday, five of our Wine and Viticulture students had the opportunity to join the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance for a Gen Z Panel at their Tasting Room Managers Luncheon! Industry professionals got to pick our students’ brains about all things Gen Z, sparking meaningful conversations about bridging the gap between the wine industry and the next generation of wine consumers. Meet our panelists! (Slide 3, left to right): Will Yearian, Olivia Snider, Jackson Decker, Gillian Beallieu, and Samantha Naylor. Curious what Gen Z had to say? Here are four key takeaways from the panel! 1. It’s all about the experience. Gen Z values social, relaxed environments where they can spend time with friends, try new wines, and make memories. Think smaller pours, more variety, yard games, and beer garden-style atmospheres! 2. The atmosphere matters. An intentionally curated space goes a long way! From the aesthetic to the music, every detail contributes to the overall experience. A Western-inspired tasting room with country music? That’s the idea! 3. Social media is this search engine. Whether it’s through friends or Explore pages, social media is where many will find their weekend plans. Content that showcases the experience and gives them a reason to visit makes all the difference. 4. First impressions are everything. For many young people, a tasting room might be their first real introduction to wine. Welcoming staff, approachable wine education, and genuine and engaging interactions can turn a first-time visitor into a returning guest (who brings their friends!). A huge thank you to @pasowine for giving our students the opportunity to share their perspectives and be part of the conversation about the future of wine. We’re excited to see where the next generation takes the industry! #calpolywineandviticulture #learnbydoing #pasowine #nextgenerationofwine #wineindustry by @calpolywvit
A little glimpse into life at the Cal Poly Winery! From beautiful vineyard views to the silly moments in between, there’s never a dull moment around here. Senior project research in action! 🍷🔬 Dr. Miguel Pedroza walks student Annie Zorgdrager through the aromas of her research wines as part of her senior project studying Pichia kluyveri, a non-Saccharomyces yeast used in winemaking research. Here, they compare wines at different stages of malolactic fermentation and learn how their aromas change along the way. Dr. Pedroza also explains what to look (and smell!) for when evaluating volatile acidity. Just another look at the hands-on research happening inside the Cal Poly winery! #calpolywine #calpolywvit #winemaking #wineresearch #learnbydoing by @calpolywvit
Thank you to our friends at Geneseo Distillers and Cass Winery for coming out and teaching us all about how they turn wine into spirits! Cal Poly Wine & Vit alum Graham Walker showed us just how much creativity goes into taking an already amazing wine and turning it into an incredible spirit. Safe to say we learned a lot, tasted some pretty cool things, and had a great time doing it. We know this meeting would’ve made Jimmy Buffett proud 🕔 by @calpolywvit
Ever seen fizzy grapes? 🍇🫧 Dr. Miguel Pedroza gives us a look inside a pressurized tank where these grapes have been undergoing carbonic maceration as part of a research project. Carbonic maceration is a winemaking technique where whole grapes ferment in a carbon dioxide-rich environment before being crushed. Fermentation begins inside the berries themselves, which is why you can see these grapes fizzing and popping as they come out of the tank! This process can create unique aromas and flavor profiles, softer tannins, and lower acid. And of course, we had to try them. The verdict? Delicious! Just another look at the hands-on wine research happening right here at Cal Poly! 🍷 #calpolywine #learnbydoing #winemaking #carbonicmaceration #wineresearch by @calpolywvit
