#ThrowbackThursday: Absalom Jones (1746–1818) Absalom Jones was the first Black priest in The Episcopal Church. Jones was born into slavery in Delaware and taught himself to read using the New Testament. When he was 16, his mother and siblings were sold, and his enslaver took him to Philadelphia. There he studied at a Quaker-run night school for African Americans. After he was freed, Jones and his friend Richard Allen served as lay ministers at St. George’s Methodist Episcopal Church and founded the Free African Society. Their work grew into the First African Church, which became the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas. In 1800, Jones petitioned Congress to abolish the slave trade and gradually emancipate those still enslaved. Two years later, at 56, he was ordained a priest. The portrait is the work of celebrated Memphis artist Artiek Smith, a painter, illustrator, cartoonist, watercolorist, muralist, and sign painter whose career spanned 70 years. His work has been exhibited at the National Civil Rights Museum here in Memphis, the Rotunda in Washington, D.C., and the Salon des Nations in Paris. Parishioner Novella Smith-Arnold gave the portrait to Calvary. Novella directed our Criminal Justice Ministry, served faithfully at the Street Ministry, and walked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as a civil rights activist during his visit to Houston. H/t to Connie Marshall, Calvary archivist, for this information. #ThrowbackThursday #CalvaryMemphis by @calvarymemphis
Read, watch, listen, and share the Rev. @katherinembush's sermon at: calvarymemphis.org/sermons "The claim of our faith, shared in and across the two testaments, is that we can be gentle in the world, that we are called to kindness and generosity, to love, to prodigious love. This is the dissent of scripture in a world that is callous and calculating." #sermons #episcopalchurch #calvarymemphis by @calvarymemphis

#ThrowbackThursday: One of the oldest printed treasures in Calvary's collection. In September 1865, the Diocese of Tennessee met in convention and formed a committee to honor its beloved first bishop, the Rt. Rev. James Hervey Otey, who had died in 1863. Their tribute became this memorial booklet, printed that same year by H. B. Durand Co. in New York. The booklet came to Calvary from Martha Hunt Campbell. She descends from the Rev. Hunt, one of the committee members who wrote it. Bishop Otey shaped much of Episcopal life in Tennessee. He helped organize the diocese in 1829, planted some of its earliest congregations, and was instrumental in founding the University of the South at Sewanee. He's part of our story, too. On Rogation Sunday, May 12, 1844, Bishop Otey consecrated a new red brick church in Memphis named Calvary. That day he preached and, with the Rev. Alston, gave Communion to about 100 people. That was 182 years ago, and our doors are still open. h/t to Connie Marshall, Calvary archivist #TBT #CalvaryMemphis #episcopalarchives #dioceseoftn by @calvarymemphis
