Day 28: Santa Irene - Santiago de Compostela, 13.7 miles, 28 days later and a little over 500 miles or 800 km I finally made it to the Cathedral de Santiago. A flood of people joined me as we walked into the city counting down the kilometer markers one by one, but what a feeling to have walked into the main square. I honestly did not think I was going to go through with actually walking it all but here we are. I wouldn’t lie if I said the euro matches may have pushed me a little harder to make it into the city in time for the finals game, but it was 100% worth it. We found the plaza where the local Spaniards were all gathered to watch the game and the atmosphere was unreal. Then they actually won it, which was definitely the cherry on top of the trip. It rained almost the whole match which was ironic to the rain we had all along the hike and the locals saying that one day we’ll miss the rain. We ending the night celebrating with everyone and giving ourselves a tour of old town with no one there at midnight. My shoes are still soaked through and my clothes will need to be washed from all the beer thrown after each celebration but this trip was one for the books. Sad it’s ending but happy I had the opportunity and time to do something like this. Thank you all for joining me and reading my really poorly typed out summaries of the day attached to my amazing photography skills. Jajajaja. Until next time!!!! by @caminandoconluke
Day 27: Sobrado - Santa Irene, 24.2 miles, Finally linked up with the famous Camino de Frances. I was expecting a butt ton of people when we joined up but it was actually decently quiet. I think we joined in between groups so tomorrow will show how many people are really on the trail. It will also be my last day on the Camino which seems crazy, and there will be a big party waiting for me in Santiago! But anyways, there were abunch of fun little artistry things along the trail today and we of course had to finish of the day with a beer, or two, and are going to bed early today to get into Santiago hopefully before the crowd. by @caminandoconluke
Day 26: Miraz - Sobrado, 15.4 miles, I think the start to this day, which the camera did not do justice, was one of my favorite portions of the Camino. There were no human made structures for a few miles and it truly felt like a hike. The nature was beautiful and there were little to no people in the trail. Eventually we popped out back into civilization and Camiel decided to have a food break but it was a shorter day so I wanted to trudge on and finish it in one section. So the rest of the I was alone and just called the some folks to catch up. Eventually I made it to an amazing monastery where I am staying at for the night with a capacity to fit 86 people. The monk said it was first built in the 1100’s and has of course had reconstruction since then as you can tell by the state of the art kitchen. But just walking around this place it is so pretty with the natural sunlight on it. by @caminandoconluke
Day 25: Vilalba - Miraz, 21.1 miles, The mood was a bit down at the start of the day from the tough loss Camiel and I witnessed as England beat his home country the Netherlands in a last minute goal. But luckily the weather noticed and gave us the sun the entire day!!! Family of cats cheered us on and there were really detailed murals under the highway underpasses we went through today. Also, this day marked officially 100 km left until Santiago, or so we thought. I was thinking there was going to be a really cool sign saying 100 km left in really big font, but no, there was a small rock with faded paint to cheer us on. But the weird thing is that there’s these fancy signs you can see in one of the pictures in almost every turn on the route, like you couldn’t get lost even if you tried, and there was one at 99.994 km, like really. So after that, we decided to have lunch there, then hit the trails to our donativo for the night where we got a nice sunset with a little drizzle of rain. by @caminandoconluke
Day 24: Mondonedo - Vilalba, 23 miles, Today was full of tough animals. First some angry looking bulls, then some horses that looked wild but obviously weren’t ontop of a mountain peak where we ascended 2,700 ft, sweating so much from the humidity along with the daily drizzle, and Mr goose who thought he was the troll of the road and not letting us past. We were only able to get past him when his owner came out with a stick and yelled at him to get out of the way. Then had some yummy pasta on the only piece of dry concrete for the entire route today, and through a flat forested route until we reached vilalba. by @caminandoconluke
Day 23: Ribadeo - Mondonedo, 21.8 miles, well we finally said goodbye to the see and hello to the rolling hills of northern Spain. Walking up and down the mountains were tough but every hill brought a spectacular view of the valleys below. I would put more pictures of every single valley I photographed but it would probably look repetitive. We stopped on the mountainside for a nice lunch break where I ate my left over curry from the night before and then you guessed it, the rain found us once again. We didn’t think it was going to be that bad but it kept getting worse until we were finally able to get shelter in the Albergue for the night. It’s the next morning right now and I am sitting in wet clothes still and the weather also blessed us with rain today sooo yea wooohooo. Anyways for dinner a made a big pasta and we watched the Spain v France game and now I need to make it to Santiago by the 14th so I can watch the final game with all the pilgrims. So that gives me roughly 4/5 more days of walking which is crazy. Time has flown by for sure. by @caminandoconluke
Day 21-22: Luarca - La Caridad, 21.7 miles. La Caridad - Ribadedeva, 16.4 miles, So Houston we may have a little problem. I think the rain may have broken my old camera cause now it only turns on when it wants to so I may switch to taking pictures from my phone if I can’t fix it. But yea, these are the only pictures I managed to take the last two days. Also other sad news, it was the last beach day for us on the Camino because the trail turns inland heading towards Santiago. So we enjoyed the sun we were blessed with and took our time today. We also ran into a pilgrim walking the other direction with his donkey hot on his heels caring all the equipment and he must of been reading my mind because right when I said hi, he immediately said please to not touch the donkey. So I only could take a picture of him. We met up with Jean Luke later and had a few beers as he told us stories about his reffing career in Belgium and all the different Belgium beers he insisted I needed to try when I visited there in the future. All in all a very chill two days besides the fact that I may have to have a funeral for my camera. by @caminandoconluke
Day 20: Soto de Luiña - Luarca, 21.4 miles, Rain, rain, go away and don’t come back another day. Por favor. I was soaked all the way through my rain jacket, and with multiple stream crossing, I eventually gave up keeping my shoes dry and just decided to stomp in every puddle I saw. I may or may not have done a full cartoon banana slip in the mud but there’s no evidence so it can’t be proven. Todays agenda included popping into a small town, walk it a little bit, then take a detour off on a beaten path all they way down to sea level, only to climb all the way back up to the next town, over and over again. The scenery was pretty but had to stay positive and play some crazy frog to distract us from the rain and being soaked. Eventually after 17 miles the weather cleared and we booked it to the Albergue in Laurca to lay down and get some warm food. Also, only 223 km left to Santiago which seems crazy that I’ve already walked 600 kilometers more or less even though my legs can definitely tell. But gotta push on to make it to Santiago to watch the Finals game if Spain can beat France! by @caminandoconluke
Day 19, Aviles - Soto de luiña, 23.6 miles, Walking out of Aviles was like a ghost town. There was no one out at 7 in the morning so we got to walk all the pretty streets by ourselves. Today was such a nice change of scenery going through the mountainside almost soley on gravel paths. We even crossed the guardian of the trail ontop of a fence and after had a well deserved break on top of a very steep hill where we got a refreshing coke from a well placed vending machine. After we made it to the albergue where we ran into Jean Luke, from Belgium, again. We first met him a few days ago in a donativo but we’re lucky to have him here to watch an easy win for Spain in The euro games. And after all day of clouds, the sun decided to come out just a sunset came to finish off the day. by @caminandoconluke
Day 18: Gijon - Avilés, 21 miles, today was another forever ending city walk. It started off nice with a walk through the local neighborhood and in the city center of Gijón that was marked quite well marked with the Camino signs. I then had a short section of pretty farmland that quickly turned into an industrial utopia and also had to walk beside a road with 18 wheelers whaling past me every so often. Just a little dangerous. But eventually made it to a 10 euro, 52 person hostel where I made a lovely pasta dinner but had to cram into in room with everyone. So crossing my fingers there’s minimal snorers tonight!!! by @caminandoconluke
Day 17: Villaviciosa - Gijon, 15 miles, Learned today that it is not fun waking up at 6 am to walk the whole day after a night of drinking and watching the euros. The hangover was deadly. The nature made it a little more tolerable and when I started to play some music it began to go away. A little while later we passed an older man that was on a walk with his pet dog and goat, no leashes just following him wherever he went. It was something out of a movie. I then ascended 1500 ft to see a cute baby donkey and ate lunch on top of the peak. Then after walking down I almost stepped on a huge beetle walking across the road who was quite scary looking and looked as if he was going to jump at me when I took the photo. A few trail markers had a little biskit man to help guide the way and there were a few churches along the way where I was able to get a few more stamps on my pilgrims credential. I think it’s coming along nicely, I can’t wait to fill it all the way up when I get closer to Santiago. I stopped for the night at a camping place that had some cool hot air balloons floating around the air and I topped the day off with a pilgrims meal which included a pasta salad, chicken and rice, a pastry, and a nice portion of wine for 12 euros, so not too bad of a day. by @caminandoconluke
Day 16: Duesos - Villaviciosa, 15.4 miles, today felt like a 9-5 job that we had to get done. Nothing too spectacular and nothing too boring. The routes offered plenty of water stations as usual (as seen in the second pic) and we passed by plenty of churches. After walking through some gravel roads, Camiel and I decided to stop for a lunch break and then continued on into town where we patiently waited for the Dutch national game to star where they easily won against Romania and then watched as Austria lost or Turkey. So as Camiel said it’s an easy route to the semi finals of the euros. But we’ll see… by @caminandoconluke
