Great news from the Gemstone and Jewellery Campus: Mira Kim @kimmira.mrk received the Herbert Hofmann Prize at the special exhibition SCHMUCK @schmuckmuenchen ! Kim graduated in 2019 with an MFA at @campusidaroberstein . Since then she took part in multiple residencies and research projects in which she focussed on the interaction between traditional jewellery techniques. In her work, Kim combines the traditional Japanese metal technique Mokume-Gane with precise guilloché engraving. Pieces such as 'Dialogue' and 'Patterns' are characterized by layered surfaces, high craftsmanship and a thoughtful approach to structure and ornament. The special exhibition SCHMUCK of @handwerkdesign_muc at @ihm_handwerksmesse was launched by Herbert Hofmann in 1959 and has been exhibited since 1962. In his name, the prize is awarded to honour three participating entries. The prize is one of the most important international awards in the jewellery sector. Levan Jishkariani (MFA) @levan_ji has received the TALENTE Prize at @handwerkdesign_muc at the @ihm_handwerksmesse in Munich! The award is presented within the 'TALENTE – Masters of the Future' exhibition and honours particularly innovative positions by emerging designers. In his series 'Ruler', Jishkariani combines precious stones with wood and steel in unusual combinations. His works are characterised by structural tension, deliberately visible connection points and a play with weight, balance and material contrasts. The starting point for his artistic research are social structures and rules and their influence on the individual. He translates these considerations into wearable objects with bold and powerful expressiveness. Congratulations on this wonderful recognition! If you still want these, they are available now @ornamentum_gallery These were the first pieces I made in Idar-Oberstein @campusidaroberstein, and still kind of my favourites. They remind me of how I started thinking along this material, curious to find out what was possible with them Screw and wannabe screw pins Nephrite jade, various jaspers, agate, silver Thank you for modeling @antal_zilahi and for the photos @glattila by @campusidaroberstein
My new solo show ‘A love affair in a hardware store at the end of the world’ @ornamentum_gallery is opening soon The work brings together the nature-made and the man-made, transforming gemstones into familiar hardware: screws, nuts, bolts, saw blades, mending plates and chainwheels. It challenges conventional ideas of preciousness while exploring the tension, collision and unexpected harmony between the natural and the manufactured. At the heart of the work are gemstone nuts and bolts, which appear in various pieces but become the protagonists of the rings. Some stones retain their natural appearance, while others are carved and faceted, echoing traditional gemstone jewellery. Just as nuts and bolts hold things together, rings often symbolise the bonds between people. Here, the rings themselves, like relationships, can be tightened, loosened, changed or undone. I started working on this series during my summer residency at @campusidaroberstein and finished it in my newly set up stonecarving workshop in Hungary. It’s been quite the ride! by @campusidaroberstein

„Delightful Doing 2 – Artistic Practice: Ways of Questioning the World“ What does it mean to conduct research through artistic practice? What kind of knowledge can emerge from it? The openness of the artistic process – the unpredictability of its course and outcome, as well as of its effect on those who encounter the work – holds a particular potential for insight. Further perspectives emerge when different disciplines and forms of knowledge come together. What happens when their methods meet? What new questions can arise from these encounters? The four lectures follow neither a fixed definition nor a shared understanding of the field. Instead, they offer possible responses to an open question: What can be discovered through these different paths – and how might they change our understanding of what research can be? 28 October 2026 at 6:30 p.m. – Jürgen Krause „Before the Work Begins“ Jürgen Krause’s works emerge from simple actions that often require careful and precise preparation. He primes paper, draws lines by hand or sharpens tools – activities that may appear straightforward, but depend on techniques that are tested, practised and gradually mastered. This preparation provides him with the knowledge and experience needed to begin, yet it does not prescribe what follows. It is precisely this relationship between preparation and uncertainty that is central to his work. Knowledge and experience provide a starting point, but do not determine the outcome. Through the continuity of making, the relationship between process and result, preparation and completion begins to shift. Something can emerge that can neither be fully planned nor anticipated. Krause’s practice raises a central question of artistic research: How much knowledge does it take to enter the unknown – and what kind of knowledge only emerges along the way? Jürgen Krause is a German artist based in Frankfurt am Main whose work encompasses drawing, objects and installation. Location: Gemstone and Jewellery Campus, Saarstraße 2, 55743 Idar-Oberstein Date: 28 October 2026 at 6:30pm @campusidaroberstein @campus_gestaltung_trier @hochschule_trier @juelwild by @campusidaroberstein
_____ We are delighted to invite you to the opening of the exhibition ‘10 Years of ASTONISH’ as part of the ‘Idar-Oberstein adorned’ exhibition programme. For 10 years, ASTONISH has served as a platform for exchange and creativity in art jewellery. Founded by students at the Campus of Gemstones and Jewellery in Idar-Oberstein, ASTONISH has gained international recognition through a multitude of exhibitions at home and abroad, with a changing line-up from 2016 and, since 2017, as a collective comprising exclusively female artists. Since 2019, the group has agreed on a new theme each year, around which it develops a series of works and an exhibition concept. In this way, ASTONISH continually reinvents itself. To mark its 10th anniversary, ASTONISH is presenting a retrospective of the collective’s work at Villa Bengel. The opening will take place on Thursday, 29th October 2026, at 6:30 pm at Villa Bengel and via livestream on the Jakob Bengel Foundation’s Instagram channel, with greetings from Peter Wenzel, an introduction by Prof. Theo Smeets, and the artists in attendance. „10 Years of AS by @campusidaroberstein
In the 2026/27 winter semester, the Gemstone and Jewellery Campus in Idar-Oberstein presents the interdisciplinary lecture series “Delightful Doing 2”, open to students, members of the university community and interested guests. Organised as part of Idar-Oberstein FormDiskurs, a cultural programme fostering dialogue between academia, the arts and the public, the series brings together artistic, academic and interdisciplinary perspectives. Each winter semester, “Delightful Doing” explores a new theme connecting artistic practice with broader cultural, social and intellectual questions. Artistic Practice: Ways of Questioning the World What does it mean to conduct research through artistic practice? What kinds of knowledge can emerge from it? Artistic processes are often open and unpredictable, with outcomes and effects that cannot always be anticipated. This openness can create new possibilities for insight and raise questions that established methods may overlook. Delightful Doing 2 approaches these questions from different perspectives. The four lectures do not follow a fixed definition or a shared understanding of artistic research. Instead, they explore possible answers to an open question: What can be discovered through different approaches to artistic practice, and how might they expand our understanding of what research can be? The lectures are held in English and are free of charge.
