POSTS STORIES REELS

For Project Robin to become a reality, funding still needs to be fully secured. Courtney English, the mayor’s chief of staff, said at the meeting that the city would need to provide around $110 million over the next decade to support the project.

The project was originally proposed to the City Council as part of a list of projects that would be supported by the mayor’s Neighborhood Reinvestment Initiative — if the legislation is approved. The initiative involves extending six of the city’s eight Tax Allocation Districts through 2056 and using the tax revenue to conduct hundreds of projects in the city.

TADs are assigned areas where new property tax revenue is generated to fund infrastructure projects within those same areas.

English said a potential funding option for the hospital would be to use dollars from the Beltline TAD and to also use funds from a “special service district” that would levy an additional tax on businesses in the city. The revenue from that district would go into a trust fund to support community development.

Even without a full crowd or formal competition categories, spirits ran high at Friday’s @morehouseadodi event. Students cheered one another on and created a sense of belonging in a space that, for a few hours, felt separate from the pressures many described.

“Being a Morehouse man isn’t simply about how you present yourself on the outside,” Devan-Bey said. “It’s the way you carry yourself. They could have a lavender graduation at Morehouse to highlight the resilience that queer students have, because nine times out of 10 it is often the queer students who are the biggest examples of what a ‘Morehouse Man’ is supposed to be.”

Georgia just elected Keisha Lance Bottoms—and made history. She will be the first Black woman to serve as governor of any U.S. state.

The former Atlanta mayor defeated Republican Rick Jackson, flipping the governor’s office to Democrats.

Bottoms campaigned on housing, health care and education, along with support for farmers and small businesses. She also vowed to veto Republican efforts to redistrict Georgia maps before the 2030 census. As governor, she’ll have the power shape the state policy, the budget, and appoint leaders across state government.

Her victory comes eight years after Stacey Abrams became the first Black woman to win a major party’s nomination for Georgia governor. by @capitalb_atl

Jasmine Clark is making history as the first Black woman with a PhD in science elected to Congress.

The Georgia Democrat, a four-term state lawmaker and Emory assistant clinical professor, defeated Republican Jonathan Chavez in the race to represent Georgia’s 13th Congressional District.

Clark campaigned on restoring funding to federal programs impacted by Trump’s 2025 One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which made major cuts to SNAP, housing assistance and other social safety net programs that many Black Georgians depend on.

She also supported federal housing legislation backed by U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock that would limit the number of single-family homes private equity firms can acquire nationwide, an effort aimed at increasing the supply of homes available to working families. by @capitalb_atl

A Black Gen Z democratic socialist is headed to Georgia’s legislature.

Mathewos Samson, 27, defeated Republican Torrey Balam to become the first Black member of the Democratic Socialists of America elected to the Georgia General Assembly.

The software integration engineer campaigned on making corporate landlords sell their single-family homes, Medicare for All and reducing corporate influence in politics.

His path included a primary runoff comeback after he and roughly 100 DSA volunteers knocked on doors and attended community meetings in southwest Atlanta. Samson said introducing himself to Black voters was key. by @capitalb_atl

Jon Ossoff won another term after making his record on housing and affordability part of his case to Black voters.

He told Capital B he’s investigated corporations buying homes in bulk, pushed for accountability for landlords receiving federal money and directed funding toward affordable housing.

He also pointed to support for Black businesses and a proposal to let on-time rent payments help build renters’ credit. For his next term, Ossoff has pledged to fight for guaranteed health care for every citizen and to stop corporate landlords from buying up neighborhood homes. by @capitalb_atl
