For much of the 20th century, steel mills created one of the most reliable pathways into the Black middle class, allowing Southern migrants to build stable lives and helping create opportunities for the generations that followed. The jobs paid wages that allowed many workers to buy homes, raise families, and achieve a middle-class life without a college degree, helping reshape Black economic life throughout Northwest Indiana. By 1984, as the steel industry was already shrinking, the average steel production worker still earned $11.87 an hour, according to a federal industry survey. Adjusted for inflation, that would equal more than $39 an hour today. — We’re collecting 250 Black stories for America's 250th. Don't miss the next one. Before the world knew Michael Jackson, Anita Hill, 92 heard something extraordinary during choir practice at his elementary school. A former music teacher in Gary, Indiana, she remembers encouraging a young Michael to sing "Climb Every Mountain," a moment she believes helped launch one of music's most iconic voices. This is Anita's story, in her own words. — We’re collecting 250 Black stories for America's 250th. Don't miss the next one. Follow @CapitalBNews #ForTheRecordArchive by @capitalb_gary
After weeks of early voting, Lake County voters waited in lines to cast their ballots to elect Democrat Jerry Williams as the county’s first black sheriff. Frank Mrvan held onto his seat with more than 60% of the vote against GOP challenger Barb Regnitz as part of a Democrat landslide in retaking Congress. Statewide, Democrat Beau Bayh secured more than 50% of the votes cast in his four-way contest to be Indiana’s next secretary of state. Both referendum questions passed by comfortable margins. Among the other county level races, Democrats handily won the contests for county commissioner, two County Council members, auditor, treasurer and clerk of court. by @capitalb_gary
Republicans tried to redraw Northwest Indiana’s congressional district to make it easier to defeat Frank Mrvan. Indiana lawmakers rejected the plan. Now voters have reelected him over Trump-backed Republican Barb Regnitz. The proposed map would have stretched the district more than 100 miles southeast into rural Wabash County, weakening the influence of Black voters in the region. Instead, the race went ahead under the existing boundaries. Mrvan’s win keeps the seat in Democratic hands and gives him another term helping direct federal funding to the region’s transportation projects, hospitals and disaster recovery. Lake County just elected its first Black sheriff: Jerry Williams. The former interim Gary police chief defeated Republican David Crane Jr. to succeed term-limited Sheriff Oscar Martinez. Williams takes over a department facing questions about jail conditions and roughly $300,000 in commissary spending flagged as improper by a state audit. He has called for an independent audit, more corrections officers and work with prosecutors to reduce jail overcrowding. His win puts those promises on the agenda for a jail holding more than 1,000 people. by @capitalb_gary
Three candidates have filed to fill the vacancy on the Gary Common Council ahead of a Democratic meeting on Thursday where the replacement will be selected. Several of the candidates listed have previously either served in Gary government or sought public office. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nursing assistants earned a national median annual wage of $42,260 in May 2025, although wages vary by employer and location. Nursing assistants work in hospitals, nursing homes, and other healthcare settings, providing essential hands-on care to patients. While other CNA training opportunities exist in Gary and Northwest Indiana, Shavouya Terry hopes her program’s accelerated format and flexible payment options will make training more accessible to residents who may otherwise struggle with the cost or time commitment. Since her arrival, Nicole Guns, and the church, have continued to grow and evolve. “I’m really excited about being a part of the continuation of the legacy of First Baptist and positioning [it] for a legacy that outlives me. That’s my goal,” she said. “To be the first in a legacy as rich as First Baptist … I hope that young girls will be able to see that they can be preachers because they’ve seen me.” As a multigenerational church, First Baptist has more than 250 members on record and is growing as it digitizes its records. Each month, new, younger members join. About 40% of the congregation is new to the church. For more, click the link in our bio. by @capitalb_gary
Voters will decide who gets to run the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, an agency which has been plagued by questions over spending and operations at the county jail. Democrat Jerry Williams, a longtime Indiana State Police major and former interim Gary police chief, faces Republican David Crane Jr., a former Lake County sheriff’s officer, in the Nov. 3 election. They are seeking to succeed term-limited Sheriff Oscar Martinez. A Williams victory would be historic; he would be the first Black sheriff in Lake County history. Meanwhile, Crane is trying again to become sheriff after losing to Martinez in 2022. For more, click the link in our bio. by @capitalb_gary
A Chicago firm bought the park in 2020 for $9 million, but it sat abandoned and undeveloped for years. Recently, residents were awarded a $15,000 Love Your Block Grant to rebuild and revitalize a playground on the corner near the course. The city has been planning the redevelopment of the nearly 100-acre course for a while. “Improving quality of life is important because that’s how you get people to want to live in a place,” said Chris Harris, executive director of Gary Redevelopment. “Relationships are made in golf, and being able to have a space where you can do that and stay in Gary is so important.” Phase two of the improvements calls for installing a brand-new putting green in spring 2027. The range is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and offers an array of golfing options. For golfers who want a small basket of balls, prices start at $5, while large baskets start at $13. The Justice Department described its monitoring program as a long-standing practice intended to ensure compliance with federal voting laws. In a statement reported by WFYI in Indianapolis, the department said monitors are expected to observe potential violations of federal law and report their findings without interfering with voters casting their ballots. Lake County Democrats say they expect federal monitors to respect the authority of state and local election officials but are prepared to challenge any interference with voting. “We do not expect any problems,” Lake County Democratic Party Chairman Michael Repay said in a statement. “We expect all monitors to follow the rules and limitations outlined in their notice and to respect the authority of Indiana and Lake County officials.” For more, click the link in our bio. by @capitalb_gary
