Building a coaching business is very different from being good at coaching. Especially when you’re starting with a small audience and no predictable way of getting clients yet. After 20+ years in business, leadership and sales, I still had to learn this world from scratch. And I spent far too much time, energy and $$$ 😬 on things that made me feel productive but weren’t getting me any closer to a client. So that’s what I’m sharing here: What actually matters when you’re building a coaching business from the beginning when nobody knows who you are yet, as a coach How to get coaching clients without sitting around waiting to be discovered. How to sell what people actually want, not just “coaching.” And what can probably wait until you have a business big enough to need it. I’ve made plenty of mistakes, tested a lot of advice, and I’m still building and testing now. I’ll tell you what worked, what didn’t, and what I think we’re making far more complicated than it needs to be. Less coaching-business mythology. More reality checks. If you are feeling overwhelmed with all the advise and just want to focus on what can work for you now These are 5 things I’d do differently now after 4 years coaching and a few expensive detours. If you’re building your coaching with a small audience, save this and if you want the full roadmap, Clients Before Complexity is free in my bio. #coachingbusiness #coachmarketing #coachingclients #businesscoachforcoaches #newcoachbusiness by @carmenalonsocoaching
I know what getting ready looks like. Another course, a logo, a website tweak, a freebie nobody has downloaded, 200 saved posts on how to get clients. Busy learning strategies. Still no paying clients. I did exactly the same. When I started coaching I wanted the perfect brand. Hours on fonts and colours. Should I do a photo shoot for the website? What should I post? I downloaded the freebies, joined the masterclasses, even took another certification. I was busy, completely immersed, learning a lot. None of it was getting me clients. And as the months went by, the doubts and questions crept in. The funny thing is, before coaching I’ve been the go-to person in the room for a long time. Then I started coaching and I was shaking in my boots 😅 I was so focused on looking professional because I didn’t feel professional. Hello, imposter syndrome. That was new to me. That’s what most advice forgets: how fragile it feels to start something new that’s so personal and so close to your heart. I see the same in the coaches I work with. Most of them are skipping one step. It’s the least glamorous one, and it’s the one that actually gets clients. You do not need the perfect instagram fewd, or 20 module prerecorded course , you need those first clients. You need to feel that this is working, that you made the right choice. That feeling comes from someone paying you. A new logo won’t give you that. The getting ready phase can feel endless. You know it’s time to step out of it. So in my free live workshop I’ll show you a faster route to your first paying clients, even without an audience. I’ll save you time on everything that can wait. And yes, your website is one of them 😉 Stop Getting Ready. Start Getting Clients 🗓 Tuesday 17 November · 6:30pm Uk time . 1:30 EST Dm me or comment READY and I’ll send you the free invite 👇 Love, Carmen by @carmenalonsocoaching
It happens one “I’ll start once…” at a time. You finish your certification. Loved it. It was the part that came with instructions. Now you need clients, and nobody really explained that part. I know, because I spent my first years in what I call the Getting Ready Loop. Four years and dozens of coaches later, I can spot it a mile off. So you pick a niche. Create a brand. Start posting. Sort of work on your website. The impostor feeling shows up, so you learn NLP or go for another accreditation. A few more free clients “for practice.” Six months later. Maybe a year. A logo. Hours choosing colours and fonts. An aesthetic feed. A guide in Canva. Twenty masterclasses saved. Half a website… But asking someone to actually work with you? You’ve sort of mentioned it. “I’m certified now!” That doesn’t really count, and you know it. You’ll start properly once the website’s finished. Or once the automations are set up. Or when you finally have more time… There’s always one more thing before you’re ready. Meanwhile, a 20-year-old with a ring light says she made millions selling a simple digital product. You’re exhausted, so you take a break. Until the next new thing pops up here. You buy the mini-course, because this one will finally give you the strategy… Round two. Here we go again. More work. Still no clients. But here’s what nobody tells you: most of that to-do list can (and should) wait. Getting clients has an order, and it doesn’t start with a logo. On Tuesday 17 November I’m running a free live workshop for certified coaches: Stop Getting Ready. Start Getting Clients. I’ll show you the order and save you months of getting ready. Bring your offer, or wherever you’re stuck, for live feedback, and let’s get you moving. Tuesday 17 November, 6:30pm UK / 1:30pm EST Comment READY, or DM me if you’re shy, and I’ll send you the invite. Love, Carmen by @carmenalonsocoaching
To the coach building something of her own, You can be sure this is the work you’re meant to do and still have days when the doubt gets loud. You can love coaching and feel overwhelmed by everything it takes to build a business around it. Both can be true. It’s a part of the story people don’t usually post about. Send this to a coach who might need to feel a little less alone in that part of the story. When you pick a niche based on your authority advantage, two things happen. First, you bring credibility with you. Maybe not as a coach yet. But as the teacher, the nurse, the manager, the woman who rebuilt her life after a divorce. Second, you already know people who trust you. Former colleagues. Your industry. Friends who’ve watched you handle hard things. At the start, getting strangers on the internet to trust you is slow and hard work. Building an audience takes time you don’t have when you want your first clients. The trust you built over years is already there. Those people have plenty of reasons to believe in you. Start with them. When I certified as a coach, I went from the top of my career to not knowing how to sign one client. So I did what good students do: another course, another certification, another programme. I was a brilliant learner. The learning just wasn’t getting me clients. The thing is, your coach training taught you how to coach. Quite rightly. It didn’t come with a manual for building a coaching business. And your previous career, however impressive, didn’t hand you one either. So you’re left working out what to offer, who it’s for and where those people are. Usually at midnight, with ChatGPT. “I do coaching sessions” isn’t something people can picture buying. A programme for a specific person with a specific problem is. That’s what I help coaches build , from where thy are at, a clear programme shaped by the people you already understand, simple ways to reach them, and sales conversations that feel like coaching. No bro-marketing “let me just check with my manager.” Simple , but not always easier But You don’t need to figure out the whole business today. You need a clear next step, and a way to keep moving. Follow me @carmenalonsocoaching for honest, practical advice on your offer, finding the right people, and sales calls that don’t make you cringe. by @carmenalonsocoaching
Put you in a room with a client and you’re magic. Put you in front of your phone camera and suddenly you have a double chin and no idea what to do with your hands. If I’m 100% honest, I have never got a single client from an Instagram video. My clients came from conversations, my workshops, people I already knew and showing up where my clients already were. Yes, I make videos. They take me forever, and half the time they still make me cringe. I’d much rather write. The second I press record… Do I need to do my hair? Make-up or a filter? Should I change this top? And why is there a dog barking every single time? 🤦🏻‍♀️ So if a video takes you half a day to record, and 2 more to edit , and after all that effort you get nothing back, of course you’re going to hate it even more. The good news: you don’t need to talk on camera to get clients. The Instagram gurus get coaches really confused. They talk about going viral,, algorithm hacks, trends... Meanwhile, all you want is to get clients from this, without losing the will to live. So if videos aren’t your thing, forget them for now. There’s a whole ecosystem around your posts. Knowing exactly who you’re talking to before you post, and you do after. That matters far more than the post itself. What you need is a system you’ll actually stick to. Perfectionism is not your friend here, so forget the perfect system and pick the one you can do at the level you’re at now, and that you enjoy too. Two carousels and a B-roll a week will do more for you than one video a month that took half a day and three weeks of procrastination. We’re coaches, not lifestyle influencers. Our clients care whether we can actually help them. Listen, I’m getting better at yapping. After 4 years of posting here, I’ve started to enjoy talking to you lot. But even when you like it, it’s a skill, and skills take time (working on it). For now, keep it simple. Building a business is overwhelming enough.
