a song from the therebefore . . . “The Old Therebefore” @rachelzegler by @caseyjosanders
𝘗𝘈𝘙𝘈𝘋𝘌 happened because it needed to. One night, I listened to a song and every element radiated this sense of aggressive hopefulness. Not merely wishful thinking, but a confident expectation of good forthcoming because it 𝘩𝘢𝘴 to—and doing what it takes to get there. I needed it. I needed to make a piece. There was no anticipating just 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 I would need it, though. Or how much I would have to fight for it. Often times, it seemed like it wasn’t going to happen—like so many other things I have long been striving for. But there was also no imagining all the goodness that would come from it, or how vividly I would see fruit of this season (and long before) suddenly and unexpectedly blossom before my eyes. This time of meditating on, physicalizing, and absolutely clawing in aggressive hopefulness has made an indelible mark on my life. There are so many loved ones who were alongside me throughout this process (and long before) with encouragement, wisdom, and support—I could not have done this without you, and I am more grateful than I can say. My aim was to make an artwork that could give a graspable form to this abstract concept, something clear to cling to when you need it. Hopefully it’s helpful to you as it has been for me. There’s much I’ve been hoping for, and in—but at the crux of it, my gaze stage right is on a Person. The Light in my corner I’m lamenting to, leaning on, trusting in, questioning, doubting, wrestling with, screaming at, strengthened by, loving more than I thought possible, and perhaps being loved more than I can comprehend. I am still full of wondering—but also full of wonder from all I have seen and experienced. While continuing to hope 𝘧𝘰𝘳 You—I am hoping in You. So here’s to moving in hope. Even when you have little. When things seem particularly bleak. When you have to scream and wrestle it into existence. Because holding on in those places is the very definition of and the purest form of hope. To keeping an open mind towards what the future could be, and pressing forward. You might be surprised by what you find. I certainly have been.
