The people wanted more... ...and you can see why. When Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony premiered in Vienna in 1813, the audience demanded this movement, the Allegretto, be played again on the spot, before the symphony had even finished 👏 This piece was the crowning moment of Cavatina Festival last month, in a concert that also featured Alma Mahler’s seldom-performed Sieben Lieder, sung by mezzo-soprano Klara Solén in the world premiere of Greg May’s new orchestration 🎶 by @cavatinaorchestra

On Sunday evening we had the pleasure of joining @donmccullinphotography in conversation with @newmanhelena for the final session of @bigbruefestival 🎉 A huge thank you to Big Brue Festival for having us perform at such a special evening and for your warm words ahead of our very own festival this week! I am heading to Bruton, Somerset this weekend for the inaugural @bigbruefestival, where I will be chairing ‘Music from the Frontline’, in conversation with the legendary photographer, Don McCullin. We will be reflecting on his extraordinary career and the images by which he has documented conflict around the world and the solace he has found in the Somerset landscape. The conversation will be accompanied by live music performed by @CavatinaOrchestra. The full programme is via the link in @bigbruefestival’s bio. #BigBrueFestival Event link: https://bigbrue.com/programme/life-in-photography Instagram: @bigbruefestival Facebook: Big Brue Festival X/Twitter: @bigbruefestival by @cavatinaorchestra
Our festival opens with Love and the Divine. The Cavatina Choir performs J.S. Bach’s motets Singet dem Herrn and Komm, Jesu, komm, alongside Henry Purcell’s O Sing unto the Lord and My Beloved Spake — music of devotion, longing and sacred love — interwoven with Shakespeare’s sonnets. Before the concert, we’re delighted to welcome Clare Asquith, Countess of Oxford and Asquith, for a special pre-concert talk at 6pm. Clare is the acclaimed author of Shadowplay: The Hidden Beliefs and Coded Politics of William Shakespeare, a groundbreaking study revealing the hidden religious and political messages coded into Shakespeare’s work — and a fascinating lens through which to hear the sonnets performed tonight. A rare chance to combine literary detective work with an evening of exquisite choral music, in the beautiful setting of St Andrew’s Church. Two of today’s most exciting living composers feature in our 24 September concert, Homage and Inspiration, at Rye Bakery, Frome. Caroline Shaw — Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer (the youngest ever, for Partita for 8 Voices) — writes music that reaches back into the string quartet tradition of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, weaving in fragments of the old alongside her own strikingly original voice. Edmund Finnis — one of the UK’s leading contemporary composers, championed by ensembles including the London Contemporary Orchestra and Manchester Collective — brings a distinctive, luminous sound world shaped by a deep engagement with the classical tradition. Both composers’ works sit alongside Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 and Schubert’s Symphony No. 5 in a programme that traces a direct musical lineage — showing how the classical greats still ripple through the music being written today. Introducing our soloist @klara.solen, joining us for the closing concert of the festival — Devotion to Delight — on Friday 25th September at #StJohnsChurchFrome. Klara will perform Alma Mahler’s rarely-heard Sieben Lieder, revealing the voice of a gifted composer whose creative genius went unfulfilled. The evening closes with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 — a work of unstoppable energy and joy. Klara is a rising star of Lieder and opera in London, currently studying at the @royalacademyofmusic Opera School. Her forthcoming roles include Cherubino (Le Nozze di Figaro) and Clairon (Capriccio). Alongside duo-partner, pianist George Herbert, she’s a young artist at Oxford International Song Festival and Leeds Song Festival, and will make her Wigmore Hall debut in 2027 with the Royal Academy Song Circle. The duo recently won first prize in the Somerset Song Prize. 🎟️ Devotion to Delight Alma Mahler’s Sieben Lieder & Beethoven Symphony No. 7 St John’s Church, Frome Friday 25th September, 7pm Tickets £10–£25 → Festival pass £70 cavatinaorchestra.com 📍 #CavatinaFestival #classicalmusic #AlmaMahler #Beethoven by @cavatinaorchestra
