7MPR The Second Midnight Physical Research- Choreographers Thoughts/ Movement Voices 2025

Cecilia Smith(she/they) @cccollective1212
Dance Company: Salve Regina University, Extensions Dance Company @salve_regina_dance
Title of Work: There’s Still Time
Performers: Angel Ahern, Erin Koulbanis, Reece Briggs, Jayden Bastille, Lilly Wood, Lylah Eckert
Themes: Sexuality, Gender

There’s Still Time is a collection of feelings and emotions related to my gender identity and sexuality as a pansexual non-binary woman. In this work, I created movement to represent how my experience of understanding my identity has shaped my feelings and perceptions of the world around me. I was deeply inspired by I Saw The TV Glow, a film centering the mysteries and uncertainties of understanding one’s gender identity, directed by Jane Schoenbrun. While creating this piece, I worked with movement that I feel connects me to my authentic self as a queer person, including influences from vogue and ballroom culture, movement created by Black queer and trans Americans.

The voice of dance: This piece creates a story of my own as well as many other LGBTQ+ people’s experience of knowing that you are more than what society’s binaries allow you to be, and breaking out of that hold. I took inspiration from my lived experiences as well as those within the trans, non-binary, and LGBTQ+ communities. The dancing and choreography is a direct reflection of the gender dysmorphia I face as a feminine presenting person, as well as how many communities can often feel unwelcoming or unsafe as a queer person. This piece follows a journey of unknowns in self-identity, and how one can find a place in a welcoming community with those who share in their identity.

Grateful and honored to have shared my work at The Gathering with @bfandartists 💛💛

This work is a continued exploration of allowing myself to shed past expectations of presentation and gender. Moving and creating in this work is truly invokes a beautiful and inspiring feeling within where I allow myself to say the things I never could, and be exactly who I am in that moment. I feel healed, honored, greatful, beautiful, blessed, and fulfilled to share this with other souls around me💛

Oil In an Open Wound

Hope, Rebirth, Growth, Power.

A special thanks to my beautiful dancers Maryn, Angel, Reene, and Theresa. I was fortunate and honored to have worked with dancers who were so deeply willing to explore vulnerability and healing with me. This work is a beautiful, important step for me and what it means to heal and believe in my own truth. The words hope, rebirth, growth, and power are all words that I found necessary for steps forward and out of one place and into the next. Words that I felt like I had lost, and had a deep desire to bring back into my life as I healed. My dancers and I explored these words and what they mean to a time of healing and change, and I am so lucky to have worked with dancers who were not afraid to dive deep and listen and share in this vulnerable place.

I hope to be better for myself and others. There’s hope in knowing that life cycles.

Old habits and energies that have to die to be reborn into something fresh; with the same experiences and past, but a new future

Allowing myself to change. Allowing new life that doesn’t scare me. Unafraid of where my growth will take me.

Taking back what was taken from me. Strong sense of self and what I deserve. Not allowing the controlling energies of others to dampen my power.
