About the exhibited photographs, Cecilia wrote:
“This body of work was created in collaboration with actress Maria Barros @___mariabarros___ and writer/film-maker Georgia Tato’ @georgia.tato , exploring the character of Netta Fornario — a mysterious and enigmatic woman of the early 20th century, whose tragic fate led her to the Scottish Isle of Iona.
Netta was a non-conforming woman of her time, on a deeply personal and spiritual journey that drew her to the island where she would eventually meet her death. What drew us to her story was her decision to leave behind her life in London to follow a spiritual calling to a remote landscape. She seemed to be searching for something greater — perhaps a passageway, a hidden layer beneath the surface of modern life.
Believing that nature held the answers she sought, Netta began searching deeply, beyond her own comprehension, until she ultimately lost her way back.
Though her story took place over a century ago, it felt strikingly contemporary — resonating with the struggles many young people face today. We both recognised within ourselves a “stranger woman” — a quiet but persistent longing for a deeper sense of belonging, whether to nature, land, community, country, or belief. In a world where genuine connection can feel increasingly elusive, this desire is often difficult to fulfil.
Through these images, we sought to explore a visceral connection between Netta and the shoreline, as she searches for an ancient knowledge within the seaweed and the shifting tides — bewitched and absorbed by their rhythms. As she surrenders to these forces, her journey becomes one that turns inward.
Maria, Georgia and I are part of a collective of women working to bring Netta’s story to life as a short film, which is currently in development.” by @ceciliaavolpi_ph
