One thing I really like about being Filipino is that wherever you go, it feels like you always have family whenever you run into other Filipino people. Lots of people comment on my high energy and exuberance and general chiller vibe (humblebrag, I'm aware), and tbh a lot of my personality traits are derived from being raised in this culture. For the uninitiated, Southeast Asians are the party Asians. And Pinoys just do it the best.

I was absolutely ecstatic to finally able to make it to one of @iheartpinays_ 's Chicago popups last night and formally meet the lovely, beautiful, and talented hostess @swipernoswiping_ !! We've been IG mutuals since I first saw her hosting the Seafood City Midnight Madness pop-up earlier this March (#tbt Filipino Lollapalooza 😹), but I never got the chance to actually introduce myself properly until now. Swiper might be one of the most inspiring figures I'm looking up to right now. She's so cool and she grew up in Chicago!!! Just like me!!!

Honestly though, my personal experience growing up in Chicago suburbs as a biracial Filipino-American wasn't always sunshine and rainbows and banana ketchup. I had your typical adolescent case of insecurity and self-image issues exacerbated by Asians being such a tiny minority group in the Midwest with the added challenge of clumsily attempting to navigate two different cultures but never feeling like I belonged to either one. It wasn't as fun being Filipino before our culture started recently becoming trendy. I used to wish that I wasn't and that I was East Asian instead because their cultures used to be the only ones that other people were actually aware of and liked and were popular.

That's why it just makes me so deeply, truly happy to see I Heart Pinays growing and gaining traction nationwide. If preteen me grew up seeing myself represented with such an awesome creative aesthetic vision spearheaded by a stunningly modelesque, confident, and unabashedly, loudly and proudly Pinay, that would've helped me to find confidence in and love for myself. I'm glad that the next generation of our diaspora will grow up in an IHeart Pinays world. We're all family, and we're stronger together. 🇵🇭💕 by @chanelauras
