Tomorrow is the first day of Mental Health Week in Canada. So it’s a good time to share this: -Unsolicited Advice, a short film/music video by @charlesspearin and @JaredSales- As a contribution to a song-a-day writing club of friends and peers, just around the time the pandemic hit, I pitched up my voice and recorded this odd little letter of encouragement to my daughters. I guess it was just something I needed to say out loud. To anybody, to nobody. Thoughts of a dad. And maybe the thoughts weren’t really for my kids but more for my younger self, more for everybody. Whatever it was, I shared it with the group and let it go. A year later, I was emailing back and forth with video animator Jared Sales about a different project and sent him a folder of my music which happened to include this song. When he heard it, he got kind of excited. Jared saw it as something that could be joined with an idea he was kicking around, a sort of algorithm of kindness (Imagine if algorithms took mental health into account 🤔). And so, following his inspiration, he quickly transformed my song it into this wonderful allegorical story of a robot that consumes and feels the overwhelming sadness in the world and then transforms it into messages of encouragement and love. May 10-16 is Mental Health Awareness Week and so it seems like a good opportunity to share this collaboration. In the end, both Jared and I are just hoping that this small contribution to the bigger conversation about mental health will simply be of some benefit to somebody, somewhere. by @charlesspearin

🎤✨Coming to Wavelength on August 27: @charlesspearin & the Local Singers with Fleshtone Aura Charles Spearin is a genre-defying Canadian musician and sonic explorer, best known as a founding member of the influential bands Broken Social Scene and Do Make Say Think. Over the past two decades, he has helped shape the sound of post-rock and indie music through a blend of heartfelt experimentation and collaborative alchemy. Spearin’s solo work continues pushes the boundaries of what music can be. His critically acclaimed project The Happiness Project blurred the line between speech and melody, transforming lighthearted interviews with neighbours into rich musical compositions. More recently, he has created large-scale works such as Music for 32 Phones Played Simultaneously, a participatory symphony in which the audience’s phones became instruments in a shared auditory experience. Whether through intricate arrangements or ephemeral sound experiments, Spearin’s work invites listeners to hear the world differently—to find music in the everyday and the extraordinary alike. ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 Located amidst the reconstruction, A Concert in the Ruins of St. Anne’s Church is a one-night-only collaboration between Wavelength Music and “gallery without walls” Art Spin. This will be a contemplative experience under the stars as we think about renewal and collective remembrance: August 27, 2026 Wavelength @ St. Anne’s 270 Gladstone Ave. Doors 8pm All Ages Single tix $26 plus taxes & fees at DICE.FM 25 and under PWYC! Happy anniversary my queen 👸🏻 by @charlesspearin
🌟Broken Social Scene and Wavelength have been tied since the start. Their very first live performance (billed as “John Tesh Jr. and the Broken Social Scene”) was at our weekly series at Ted’s Wrecking Yard on December 17, 2000. Since then, BSS has exploded into a huge collective of Canadian talent and spin off groups. Don’t miss their homecoming appearance at RBC Amphitheatre TONIGHT + @charlesspearin on August 27 for a concert in the ruins of St. Anne’s Church!🧱🔊 🎥Video by Ian Daffern of @idfactoryfilms & DOP @sheldonshoots - a teaser for the forthcoming short documentary “Wavelength: 25 Years of Music + Community” - coming this fall! by @charlesspearin
