THE STORY TO WATCH IN 2026: @stephen.wilson.jr

It started while I was sitting in the pickup line outside my kids’ school. My friend @katiekerkhover texted “have you heard Stephen Wilson jr?”

“No. I’ll go listen”

I opened @applemusic and saw there were only three songs released from this guy. Within 3 minutes - my first listen was “Year to Be Young (1994)” - I was 100% sold. And by the end of “the beginning” I was calling Katie to see where I could watch this guy live.

A couple weeks later, I was at a show with 65 people at a legendary dive called @endnashville … he debuted a new song - “Calico Creek” and played something called “Cuckoo” that was super-glued into my brain.

I’ll jump ahead (past the @theblueroomnashville jam where John from @brothersosborne and I talked about the prolific guitar playing by SWJ…and past Stephen’s 1st interview, where he came in and blew our minds with tales of his past-life as a scientist, and a story about how a @thetimmcgraw song taught 12-year-old Stephen about the power of music…EVEN past the time he took me to my 1st boxing gym for @charleyfoundation - teaching me a skill I still practice and love years later).

This next part brings me an enormous joy. It’s similar to how I feel when a listener sends me a note about discovering a life-altering song from listening to my show. I’m learning that my job is most-meaningful to me when it has a positive impact on individual people. When I am part of the reason that someone experiences the happiness or validation that they deserve.

Back to Stephen: last month, he took the stage on the @cma AWARDS and gave the most galvanizing performance of the year. A hauntingly connected imagining of “Stand By Me”

That was a moment. It is the catalyst that came about by grassroots fans and champions who have spent years singing his praises. He was on that stage because of each of you. And that allowed even more ears and souls to be moved by his art.

Days later, my friend Stephen kicked off shows at the Mother Church of Country Music. A milestone venue for every artist in this space and he not only played The Ryman, he sold it out two nights in a row.
