For the past few months, Wu Feng has been tracing the strange history of mushroom huts, or little pavilions shaped like mushrooms, across the world: from the Nordic countries to Japan, the USSR, and eventually China.

Tonight we had an hour-long phone call, and he shared some really exciting findings with me. And honestly, why are there not hundreds of research papers on these things already? 🤔

So far, it seems that mushroom huts may have become possible with the spread of cement construction techniques. Their frequent appearance alongside other functional animal-shaped structures, especially elephant slides, might also be connected to the post-war rise of public playgrounds. And the mushroom form itself may have evolved from earlier tree-like structures.

But there are still so many mysteries.

The most fascinating part is that these mushroom huts used to be everywhere in China.

Why did they appear? Who built them? Why mushrooms?

We are still digging. And a little sneak peek: our new zine, the mushroom issue, is now in the works 🍄

Finally, finally, the new issue of PO Journal: Kitchen is almost here! 🍳

The whole issue was designed by the wonderful Xiao Mei and Ying from edit by Edit.er @edit.by.edit.er who also made all the little drawings scattered throughout. They even hand-typed parts of a few articles while disappearing into some wonderfully obscure corners of modern kitchen history.

The PO Journal: Kitchen issue is on the way, too! Here are some snippets from our designers as they worked on this fun and intimate issue, which looks at the kitchen not only as a place for cooking, but also as a space for care, community-building, and all kinds of creative uses.

For example, in the former Soviet Union, people made bootleg vinyl records using discarded X-ray films...
