Swimming lessons Review and annotations 🥽🏊🏼

✨📖 At its core swimming lessons emotionally charged debut that follows siblings Michelle and Meredith through hauntingly painful grief, trauma, and healing in a beautifully non‑linear narrative. Set in Singapore, the novel weaves supernatural realism with real-world struggles—eating disorders, sexual abuse, queerness, family breakdown—painting a fragile, tender portrait of sisterhood and survival. Seah’s poetic prose and layered structure mimic the fog of memory, while his sensitive handling of queerness in a conservative Asian context adds profound depth. A tear‑jerker you'll carry long after the last page.

✨ The bond between Meredith and Michelle is raw, real, Their dynamic reflects the deep emotional push and pull that often exists in sibling relationships, especially those shaped by trauma. The book allows you to feel their growing pains, their resentment, their moments of tenderness, and their attempts to protect each other in the face of a world that has hurt them both. The way Meredith was even thinking of her sister in her literal death bes was really beautiful to read. (Sniff sniff It made me cry)

✨ Grief is a constant, humming undercurrent throughout the novel. Michelle 's memories—sometimes conflicting, often fragmented—form a layered narrative that jumps between past and present, creating a fog of nostalgia and unresolved trauma. Seah masterfully uses this time-jumping to mimic how memory works, especially when shaped by grief and guilt. It was so painful to go through their life.

✨ The novel doesn’t shy away from the darkest shadows of growing up, including sexual abuse. One of the sisters (Michelle) experiences rape—a painful, horrifying moment that Seah handles with sensitivity, without voyeurism. It is not just an event but a rupture in the timeline of her life, and the novel explores how she tries to cope & repress.

' I can't think straight, everything seems futile , I don't care if somebody thinks of me anymore, if hardly anyone writes to me '
"Solitude it's become my trade . as it requires a certain discipline, it's a condition I try to perfect .and yet it plauges me .it weighs on me inspite of knowing it so well
Whereabouts Written by Jhumpa Lahiri is one of my favourite read of her I've read only 3 works of her and I'm just hooked to her words it's like she's a singing a song which I don't want to pause ever, if even she is writing a grocery I can gobble that up. How come she's so rhythmatic and poetic!
There's a stillness in this book, a calm soothing effect this book provide , it's beyond beautiful, it's like this book is written just for you, and she's following you for a very long time and she gives you just the wordss you need to hear .

Whereabouts is about a single woman who's in her mid30's to 40's is a professor, excellent at her job, there is a constant loneliness going through the book it's sometimes heartwrenchning and beautiful, we get a sense of who she's as a person Bookish, unlikeable sometimes interesting. Flawed but perfect should be word, to be honest there's no plot in this book it's like you're watching her going places to places it's like you're her friend who's absent so you're getting all the updates , Lahiri shares her insecurities , faults, regret everything in between which makes us human cause no one is interesting we start liking somebody bcz we start liking their ugliness in the beautiful isn't it!? Am I wrong!?
Ever since I heard the word Solitude I fell in love with the concept of it, the writting is like a river flowing through forest you would love to hear , it's melodious. First published in Italian so you will stumble upon few Italian words later on its translated by herself only, She turned ordinary into extra ordinary, it's hard to not to think about this book once you complete, if you love melancholy you would love this book, highly recommended, if you're feeling no one's there to listen to u read this book you'll find comfort in it .

Rating?! 5✨ there will be ppl who won't agree with me

I have a love - hate relationship with Durga Puja, when I'm home mostly I'm sad around that time if I'm not going out, festival makes me sappy for personal reason but there are lots of ppl out there who feel the same way, when I got a chance to spend atleast 3 days out of Kolkata, doing dandiya and dance (secretly I've always wanted to do dandiya, this was first time, I loved it and missed my mom the most) but before my first reaction was, 'durga puja mein ghar nhi rahungi?' , aarey chodo yarr paise seh sab theek ho jata hein , itna sochneke baad when I went there I didn't feel sad, met new people talking to them felt nice, almost like I've known them forever. Taking new steps may feel hard and tough but sometimes they come out really well.

This is how my Ponchomi - First Saptami of Durgapuja went

I DON'T EVEN LIKE EATING KINDER JOY. MY MOM EATS THEM. I'M JUST HERE FOR THE TOYS gang 😭✋🏻
And what did I get from the BIG BOX? TOYS I ALREADY OWN🙂& oh something I didn't have 🤭 more than thanks to the friend who noticed I was trying to get gwen 🙂 atleast he noticed bro .

Gwen? ❌ Peter Parker? ❌ My happiness? Currently under investigation 🚨
How fickle happiness can be ?

At this point, only Spider-Man and Harry Potter have the power to make me buy Kinder Joy because apparently, financial responsibility leaves my body when fictional characters are involved. 🕷️⚡

AND DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THOSE WEB SHOOTERS. I DON'T WANT THEM. I WANT GWEN AND SPIDEY. IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK, KINDER JOY?!

Please tell me I'm not the only one buying Kinder Joy exclusively for the toys while someone else eats the chocolate. 😭

Collectors, assemble. Has Kinder Joy personally betrayed you too?!

Had my Red carpet Moment🫢💃🏼 🎬📚✨

An evening full with Red carpet, glam fits, book inauguration, live music, cake cutting, book signing AND a whole theme song made exclusively for Love Is Off the Table' by Abhipsa Mondal! EXCUSE ME. 😭❤️ That's so cool and classy isn't it? Life worth living again.

The book's theme song was an idea by Abhipsa herself, brought to life by Two Rupee Song -composed and arranged by Swaham Chakraborty, with lyrics and female vocals by Mayurakshi Kundu 🎶 couldn't tag her but do go to their YouTube channel for the song, the song is so catchy and groovy, absolutely loved it.

From talking about the story to jamming live, this was NOT a regular book launch

Is love off the table in the book? Or it's just a phase?
Now I'm curious: what really went off in the book, always wanted something like this? Starting this asap 🙊👀👇

Go get yours from Amazon now, you don't want to miss the fun and thrill of a ride like this.

Congratulations, Abhipsa! ❤️ And thank you so much for a blast of a event like this & thanku for inviting me to your first book launch day. I wish you all the best
