POSTS STORIES REELS

I've been hearing about a lot of tragedies the past few weeks, and it really hit home for me when Nigeria was knocked out of the FIFA tournament a couple days ago. I've heard many people complain that the world cup is a distraction from many important issues, but to be honest I believe that it gives so many people a reason to celebrate and support one another, a reason to hope. .

The issues and tragedies spanning the globe are endless: From the recent deadly floods in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire (#inondationsCIV) to the recurrent violence in the middle belt region of Nigeria (#WeJosWantPeace) to the continuous violence and deaths caused by U.S. police (#BlackLivesMatter) and Nigerian Special Ant-robbery Squad (#EndSARS) to the U.S. Supreme Court's upholding of 45's #MuslimBan to his zero tolerance policy that has caused THOUSANDS of children to be separated from their parents (#ReuniteFamilies) to today's mass shooting that occurred in the capital city of Maryland, a 40 minute drive from my house. These are just a few of the things that have been on my mind. .

In the midst of all of this, I'm learning to still hold on to hope. I've been feeling a bit overwhelmed by the extremity of some of the crises mentioned above, but last week I was reminded that hope - not to be confused with optimism - is not a fleeting emotion. Rather, it is something we have to commit to and practice each and every day. I'm hopeful that we in our respective communities will rise up, stand together, and fight for peace & justice.

"There is peace and security here in the East, unlike in the North." These words were spoken by an Enugu state government official as 2015 was coming to an end, just five months before the #EnuguMassacre by Fulani herdsmen that killed more than 50 people. Since that time, there have been other attacks throughout the southern (Edo, Imo, Oyo, Ondo, etc) and northern (Kaduna, Benue, etc) regions of the country. @falzthebahdguy shed light on this (and other issues) in his recently released song #ThisIsNigeria.
.

Today was the National Day of Remembrance for all victims of violent killing in Nigeria. Citizens all across the country rallied together to remember the countless children, women, and men who have been murdered as well as to advocate for the government and security forces to ensure safety for everyone. .

It always amazes me how people can take so little account of human life. I couldn't help but think about the countless people in captivity and displaced in Nigeria. My thoughts also traveled across the Atlantic to the U.S. where deadly shootings occur every week, many times in schools. Amidst the mourning, it is important to remember that there is hope embodied in those who survive.

To those whose melanin / ethnicity made them a victim of state sanctioned executions across time and space...⁣
⁣
To the women, girls, & trans folks whose gender made them a victim of sexual and physical violence, especially those forced to observe lockdown with their abuser during this pandemic...⁣
⁣
We say: Ka fa nodu na ndọkwa. May they rest in peace (& eternal power).⁣

Got my 🇭🇹konpa fix at the third annual @seygouayiti in Baltimore🥹 The event featured Haitian-American food, Haitian rum tasting & drinks, and of course Haitian konpa music & dance class by @dance_with_jenn. 2026 was my best @spicemasgrenada road by far. I felt so connected to my Igbo🇳🇬 roots. I leaned into local & traditional Grenada carnival experiences: J'ouvert w/ traditional mas band from St. Patrick's @belmontrevellers, Monday traditional mas w/ St. Andrew's @labayetci Shortknee masquerade band on roller skates, Monday night mas w/ local band Mega Force Promotion, and Tuesday Pretty Mas w/ local band @tipsydband. Everything was intentional down to the Igbo threading hairstyle I chose.

For Tuesday, I was drawn to @tipsydband's SUCURI section as soon as I saw it✨The snakes on the costume remind me of eke (python in the Igbo language) which is sacred in Igbo culture & cosmology. For me, the costume is an ode to Idemili, the Igbo water goddess from my 🇳🇬 hometown in Idemili South, Anambra state, Nigeria. She's similar to Mami Wata known across West Africa, Mama Glo/Dlo in Grenada and across the Caribbean.

My time in Grenada has been full of culture, growth, & connection. A reminder that I'm rooted & yet I flow✨🪾🌊 by @chistory_
