January 2022, London. My brother and I are sitting in a pub, discussing an upcoming multi-day trek over pints of beer, flipping through Wanderlust by Cam Honan for inspiration. Fast forward to August. We’re in northeastern Italy with 2 friends, hiking for 9 days across a majestic mountain range known as the Dolomites. Characterized by rocks that soar skyward, this region stands out for its dramatic vertical limestone walls, sheer cliffs, narrow ridges, deep valleys and mystical appeal. A feast for the eyes. In an Instagram world pushing short-format reels to compete with rising video-based platforms, here’s a 15-minute compilation of moments captured on the Alta Via 1 trail. If you feel like tagging along, I invite you to find a comfortable position, put your headphones on and delve into the natural beauty of this region. This film is dedicated to my brother, who went above and beyond to overcome excruciating pain and complete the trek, despite a double knee injury that hit on Day 2 and lasted until the end. @karimbechir, your mental strength and utmost dedication to get to the finish line will forever serve as a reminder to never give up and keep pushing forward in life. @rubysiw and @sarahekmekjian, your humor, lightness, solidarity and compassion kept us going when we needed it the most. You’re the best hiking partners we could have hoped for, and I’m infinitely grateful for our friendship. Here’s to many more challenging and memorable adventures together 🐺 Music: Azure - Greg Haines by @choucribechir
Documenting the 10-day trip of 5 friends exploring islands. It's with a lot of hesitation that I'm posting this video. I thought a lot before sharing it given what's going on in Lebanon but I decided to proceed and do so, hoping it might give our brains and hearts a little break from the maddening situation. by @choucribechir
JULY 2024 MIXTAPE | Featuring Muslimgauze, Nicolas Jaar, SANAM, Abul Mogard, Drew McDowall and others. After two mixtapes focused on soul, funk and rock music, I am excited to return to ambient, experimental and electronic sounds. If you’ve been tagging along for a while, you know how much these genres resonate with me. The July mixtape feels like going on an open-ended journey without a map. It’s unhurried, wandering, observant, unpredictable and adventurous. Melodies unravel slowly, soundscapes shift gradually, and textures dissolve into echoes and frequencies in captivating ways. This one is particularly close to my heart. It includes tracks by several artists from back home (SANAM @sanam.music_, Yara Asmar @microwave.blues, Charbel Haber @barbelbaber, Fadi Tabbal @fadi_tabbal, Munma / Jawad Nawfal @vvvabeirut ) who have been shaping the tight-knit Lebanese experimental scene with boundary-pushing sounds, often rooted in the harsh and unprecedented realities of the country’s social, political and economic landscape. The mixtape also features two dear friends (aheich @navstyachka and Tendertwin @tendertwin), both of whom recently released their debut EP, and two stunning new tracks by all-time favorites Abul Mogard @abulmogard and Drew McDowall @drewmcdowall Special mention goes to the opening track ‘Streets and River’ by AM 4 — thank you @merikalmo for recommending this gem. I hope you enjoy this compilation. It’s hauntingly beautiful and profoundly reflective. To appreciate it fully, an uninterrupted active listening session is recommended. 🎧Mixtape link in the usual place 📮Sign up to the newsletter (link in bio) to receive the next monthly mixtape in your inbox. by @choucribechir
JUNE 2024 MIXTAPE | Featuring Slowdive, Aboukir, Lulu Van Trapp, The Verve, Motrik and others. This month, we turn the spotlight on psychedelic rock and krautrock. The overall mood is spacey, swirly and exploratory, with a fierce section of high-energy tracks towards the middle. Some songs feature unconventional structures, extended instrumental parts and repetitive rhythms. Others are simpler, more smoothing and gentler on the ear. We start with ethereal soundscapes and wrap up along the same notes. Everything in between is a blend of hazy psychedelia and raw intensity that slowly builds up toward a climax before retracting in silence. I hope you enjoy it 🫡 Inflection point: ‘Daytime Coma’ by Archive Special mention goes to Rebecca Baby’s soaring voice and tremolo on ‘Brazil’. Thank you @antoinechoueri @maaathis.mp3 @gil_rglt @mosto_berlin for indirectly contributing songs to this one. 👉🏻 Been listening to rock/psy/krautrock music lately? Don’t hesitate to share tracks in the comments.  🎸Happy listening 🎧Playlist link in the usual place 📮Sign up to the newsletter (link in bio) to receive the monthly mixtapes in your inbox by @choucribechir
After a long break, I’m happy to get the mixtapes going again! In the newsletter that went out today (linked in the bio), I explain why that project was put on hold for a year and what led me to resume it today. ‍ Featuring deep bass lines, soulful arrangements and catchy grooves, the MAY 2024 selection is undeniably anchored in the 70s and 80s. With songs by Crown Heights Affair, Jana Koubková, The Doors, Frankie Smith, James Brown, Parliament and other great musicians from that era, it’s edgy, energetic, playful and funky. Greg Foat, Tutankhamun and Golf Trip bring a modern twist to the mix, while Andrea Laszlo de Simone and Lucio Battisti do what they do best: infusing emotional depth with their distinctive Italian flair and rich instrumentation. As usual, we start quietly, and the pace gradually picks up before winding down again as we reach the end. ‍ Happy listening! Special mention goes to ‘Billy Jack’ by Curtis Mayfield. 🎧 Playlist link in the usual place 📮 Sign up to the newsletter if you’d like to receive the mixtapes (and a short personal update) in your inbox every month by @choucribechir
With a focus on rock, the March mixtape honors big names from the past who revolutionized the genre, and inspired so many generations to create, innovate and push in the same direction. ‍ From Mark Knopfler’s magnificent guitar work to Shuggie Otis’s funky grooves, passing by an epic long piece by The Doors and some dark rock and roll by The Stones, the first part takes us back to the 70s, a decade of great experimentation, and as far as rock music was concerned, a golden age that gave us some of the most iconic and influential bands of all time. ‍ We then move to more psychedelic and krautrock arrangements. Featuring dreamy voices, heavy riffs, stoned melodies, motorik beats and spacey guitar solos, the middle section balances out old time classics (CAN, Greatful Dead, The Brian Jonestown Massacre) with fresh jams by more contemporary names (Allah-Las, The Black Angels, Menk). ‍ The expansive and uplifting ‘Space to Bakersfield’ marks a shift to slower sounds; from here onwards, the pace decelerates, and we swing into a melancholic mood. With Lou Reed’s nostalgic tribute to Coney Island, Paul McCartney’s incredible vocal performance on ‘Wild Life,’ Mark Lanegan’s heartfelt baritone and Bob Dylan’s soul-stirring desolation on ‘Love Sick,’ the last stretch is a reminder of the embrace that music offers when it comes to connecting with our true selves, and the solace it provides in moments of pain and sorrow. After a lightweight December mixtape and a funky January one, February marks a return to more experimental sounds. Covering doom jazz, ambient, electronic and instrumental compositions, this is the soundtrack of getting caught up in a storm while hiking in nature. "What is the imagined setting all about?" you might ask. If you listen to a mixtape in one shot and follow its order, you will develop a personal, intrinsic sense of meaning and connect to its sonic narrative. Imagination frees us from the confines of our immediate reality, music is transportive, and the imagined setting is an attempt to come up with a suitable context that would best complement that narrative. To think of a setting is a stimulating monthly challenge. Sometimes, the context comes to mind naturally. Other times, I feel stuck and keep listening to the selection until an idea bubbles up to the surface. The same can be said about sequencing, a trial and error process of re-ordering, pairing, constructing and deconstructing, until I reach a flow I’m happy with. Which of the two comes first? One kicks it off the but both are correlated, and they eventually work in tandem to influence and elevate one another. A clear setting will lead to a stronger narrative and refining the sequence will in turn better serve the setting. You’re on your own, threatening clouds start to form, the wind intensifies, all hell breaks loose, and the storm eventually dies out, leaving only wispy clouds behind as evidence of its existence. Welcome to the first mixtape of 2023! ‍ As promised, I’m back with a sequenced selection of my favorite discoveries of the month, and this one is dripping with funk! You’ll come across ambient textures, soulful singing and Afrobeat rhythms, but the core breathes heavy downbeats, syncopated bass lines and infectious drumming that will keep your foot tapping and head nodding. ‍ Fun fact of the month — the word ‘funk’ evolved to take on different meanings but did you know that it initially referred to a strong odor? Contrary to white culture where the term can have bad connotations, in African communities, it had the positive sense that a musician’s hard-working, honest effort led to sweat, and from their physical exertion came an exquisite and superlative performance. ‍ As always, we start very quietly with atmospheric contemplation and progressively ascend towards groovier sounds before ending on a light note. ‍ Thank you for following, sharing your thoughts since the launch of this project and sending your favorite songs of the moment. I love curating these lists and your feedback has been very supportive. The last mixtape of 2022. Here we are again, going through another cycle - one year ending, another one about to begin. As I write this, I’m revisiting some of my favorite albums of the year, feeling thankful for the impact music has on my everyday thoughts, emotions, and interactions, as well as for the peace and space for reflection it gives me. ‍ On the repertoire this month, a selection of soul, funky and instrumental songs. Easy listening to end the year on a light note. ‍ I hope you’re keeping warm wherever you are, having a restful holiday break and sharing wonderful moments with family and loved ones. Daring. Stimulating. Disorienting. Mysterious. Powerful. Meditative. Visceral. Cathartic. ‍ These are some of the adjectives that come to mind when I reflect on my favorite discoveries of November. ‍ For the last couple of years, I found myself more and more intrigued by music that doesn’t follow conventional rhythms and melodies, taking pleasure in the uncommon elements it offers. November was all about diving deeper into these sounds. ‍ Drones and electroacoustic compositions are the order of the day on this collection of subtle and incredibly well-crafted songs, some of which venture into fascinating sonic territories. Sonic Experience Sonic Wombs | Berlin 2021 DIY Exhibition The work on display was accompanied by a 35-minute audio piece. Viewers were encouraged to scan a QR code, put headphones on and take part in an audio-visual experiment revolving around slowing down, looking deeply at images and embracing vulnerability. The audio piece served two purposes: a temporal guide to stretch one’s visual experience over half an hour, and an immersive layer to help participants disconnect from their day-to-day and look inwards. by @choucribechir
