Chovu is a shamanic black metal band from Kenya. This might be the first time you read that sentence but I promise you it won’t be the last.
After listening to Ufalme Wa Mali I went digging into the lore and came back with very specific questions. This is a perfect example of how black metal can stay true to the genre without being a copy paste of people before them. I suggest you listen to their entire discography AND go deep on the lore. There’s so much to unpack and I don’t want to spoil it.

Meet Kalypso, played by @kokeshidoll
She thought the old island magic still obeyed her, believing she could cage an ancient bloodline the way she once held Odysseus. But Ogalo is no Greek mortal bound by pity or passage. He is a shapeshifter of ancestral wrath—a shifting, multi-faced current that slips through woven threads and turns every ritual circle inside out.
Now, the hunter rots in her own isolation, haunted by phantom gazes shifting in the shadows and the creeping terror of faces she cannot pin down or banish. The candles burn low, the spells splinter into ash, and the true master of the domain is the one watching from the dark.

@chovu_official - Ufalme Wa Mali

Thank you for the recommendation @hessian.666 @southernsoundclash

This is a very unique release. Chovu from Kenya Africa comes at us with a blend of African music and Black Metal.

Mixing drums and chanting with harsh vocals and groovy chilling riffs they give this shamanistic Black Metal release a dark and eerie vibe to it. Relaxing in my chair and closing my eyes this album takes me to the plains under the night sky with only a moon to fight off the endless darkness.

It’s a primal, beautiful album. Dripping with atmosphere… Top notch stuff.

It’s another great example of how unique Black Metal can be when bands choose to step outside of the preconceived Black Metal box and do their own thing.

Definitely give this one a listen and I’m going to check out more of Chovu’s music!
