Nobody tells you plein air painting is basically a race against the weather. Can my brush move faster than the clouds? Likely not, but we’re gonna try!
This storm rolled in fast and I had maybe 20 minutes before the light and the ridge completely changed. Shadow chasing shadow, gold going grey and back again.
Maybe it’s the athlete in me just needing that adrenaline rush, because yes, snapping a photo and painting in studio WOULD be much easier, but where’s the fun in that?!

“Shifting Ridges,” oil on panel, painted on location outside Missoula.

Indian summer in Montana means a 40-degree swing between morning and afternoon, and clouds moving so fast their shadows race across the land like something out of a dream.
These two minis came off the easel in the thick of it. I wanted big sky, loose brushwork, and every bright green and blue I could pull from the palette, because that's how the light feels right now: restless, electric, never the same twice.
I've been walking this land for a full year now, miles most days with my pup, and it still surprises me constantly. The colors shift, the light shifts, even the creatures change with the season. Shoulder season might be my favorite show of all.
Which one are you drawn to, 1 or 2? 👇 by @christinegarrisonart

September on the Blackfoot. The trees haven’t gotten the memo yet, but my palette has, going full autumn while I can still feel the warmth on my hands. Won’t last.

These little minis have become some of my favorites. Created in the slow season, when that feeling of space and time seems to stretch endlessly. The biting windchill had me escaping to my car to warm up every few minutes, brush in hand, waiting for feeling back in my fingers.
There's a duality to painting the shoulder season. Everything feels sharper somehow, the light, the edges, the quiet. And at the same time, it's a season that asks you to seek out softness and refuge where you can find it.
These pieces hold both of those things. Available now as a set or individuals. DM for details or check out the link in the bio.

Some days the plans change. Perhaps "evolution" is a more accurate term. Follow along as this piece took shape last week (live in the Outpost of Paws Up).
I set out to paint the iconic Blackfoot river in quiet, open light. The sunrise had other ideas. The warm, furrowed trunks of the Ponderosa kept pulling focus until they became the heart of the painting, standing over the water the way they stand over this whole valley.
Swipe through to watch it change. The original is available. DM me for details, and if you're staying with us at Paws Up, come find me painting on the property.

🔴 SOLD,
“Where the Clouds Dance” began as a series of plein air studies in early spring called “Transitions on the Ridge.” I love chasing the way shadows move across these Montana hills, but what really captured me for this piece was the clouds. They seemed to dance on the wind, making even the grandest of landscapes seem small. The final 24”x36” oil on canvas leans into loose palette knife texture to capture that motion. It was one of my favorites in the studio, and I’m so glad it’s going somewhere it’ll be appreciated every day. by @christinegarrisonart

On the easel in the Outpost today. Had something else planned on the way in, but HAD to pull over for a scurry down to the river for photos and quick sketch. After a fresh rain it got a bit slippery, but worth the mud for that morning light ❤️
I love the way the river has picked up just enough for a little bubbly white water, but still clear enough to enjoy the reds, purples, and greens of the rocks below.

A small study in soft light. I wanted this one to feel like standing still in the quiet before the day starts: bright, but hushed, pregnant with possibility, but calm.

Golden Tranquility: Elk Creek Pasture 6x8, oil on plein air board
There’s a particular light that only shows up in early September, the cottonwoods just starting to turn, the pasture gone gold, the cows unbothered by any of it. This is the quiet before the quiet season. 🍂
Who else is looking forward to it? 🙋🏻‍♀️

A year of doing this full time in beautiful Montana. A year of mistakes, growth, self doubt, excitement, and a path forward that still feels novel. Some days we just need an inspirational pep talk to remember: trust in yourself more than you trust the fear of the unknown. by @christinegarrisonart

There’s a moment before the mountain shows up. Just texture, movement, and a loaded palette knife dragging color into grass.
That’s my favorite part of painting Montana. You build the land before you ever see it.
Wait for the reveal, this one’s straight off the easel here at Paws Up.

Brushes ready, water clean, palette loaded. Then the hills and light remind you why you show up in the first place.
