Thank you for the warm welcome, @thesaltybookworm & thank you to the sweet faces I read to today (including my amazingly supportive Editor & Friend @anastasmargaret & @apritchie ‘s lovely parents)! It was a special day in a special place!

OWL CAPONE, written by me, illustrated by @robsayart , edited by @anastasmargaret , art directed by @ninadunhill & published by @penguinkids was chosen by @barnesandnoble as one of the Best Picture Books of 2026!!

I cannot put a number on how many hundreds of picture books were published this year, but I can tell you that THIS is a list of only 30. I’m absolutely gobsmacked! Thank you, B&N for loving OWL like we do!

This story was born from experiences with someone who is intentionally hurtful. Which seems sad. But if it wasn’t for them, there wouldn’t be this. So thank you to them for being a rat…and proving once again that kindness wins!!

@taylorswift you’d appreciate this one.

THIS is why @robsayart is second to none!!!

Introduce the family to the world of gangsters with quirky, relatable animal characters and plenty of juicy subtext. Oodles of puns and references that will make caregivers giggle and illustrations popping with bold, bright, textures that sneak in some clever hints to be snapped up by sharp youngsters. This authorial debut is perfect for readers who are kind, readers who need to find their way to kindness, and readers who need a reminder that kindness is not a weakness.

This book is sure to end up living in stacks of books to be read and re-read over and over, as it has in our house. Immediately following our first reading my little one snatched it up and insisted on reading it themselves to the whole family, topping it all off with an impromptu song and dance about the main characters and a warning to watch out for a double crossers. This song has been adorably embellished upon, following every successive reading.

Suited for any age group, from our littlest animal lovers to older listeners that revel in inside jokes all the way up to caregivers looking for a hilarious, nostalgic addition to the bedtime routine.

Already widely available through our local @midyorklibrarysystem, @fourcountylibrarysystem, @ocpl, and hopefully through yours, too!

Words. On. Warren. What can I say?!?! My very first author event was unforgettable. I got to visit my old ‘hood, spent time in one of the CUTEST bookstores in existence, and got to share it with my girls, Billie & @xindiyanart . What a gift, what an honor, what a great bookstore in a great city. So many special moments that I won’t soon forget. Thank you, @wordsonwarren …I’m your biggest fan! We missed you, @robsayart …a November visit is necessary!!

I love designing characters. And boy does OWL CAPONE have a lot of them.
There are literally dozens of background characters alone, and each one is stylized in there very own Prohibition Era inspired outfit.
Like many of my other books, almost all of my designs start as doodles in my beloved travel sketchbook and red Prismacolor
Col-Erase Pencil which I have been using since design school. Most of these little guys were done on my couch at night while watching TV. I don’t really allow myself to sit on the couch without a sketchbook. I think it’s a great practice to always be drawing when you have some downtime. It becomes second nature to draw over time and I don’t even think about it anymore. It just happens.
✏️
I watched a lot of documentaries about Al Capone and movies like the UNTOUCHABLES to help make me feel like I was in the world rather than an outsider. This is easily the most I researched for a book ever and it was so much fun to then spin it into OWL’s world and characters. I drew so many rats. SO MANY. 🐀🐀🐀🐀
And the city kid in me finally had his chance to shine and loved every minute of it.
