POSTS STORIES REELS

Citizen Projects is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Kwadwo Boafo.

TROPICAL PATINA references Kwadwo’s appreciation for the architecture of the tropics, specifically the way heat, light, foliage and time transform structures. The self taught painter employs loose strokes of oil to depict vignettes of his built environment of Osu, Accra.

The artist will be present on October 29th from 6pm - 9pm for a celebration of this body of work. Join us!

The exhibtion runs through December 10th, 2026. by @citizenprojectspace

Halimatu Iddrisu (born in Accra Ghana) is a visual artist currently living and working in Kumasi, Ghana. She earned both Bachelor of Fine Arts (2020) and Master of Fine arts (2024) from the Kwame Nkrumah University of
Science and T echnology (KNUST). Her multidisciplinary practice explores the intersections of gender, religion and structural power, with a focus on the marginalization of women within Ghana’s Zongo communities. Rooted in personal experience and communal memory, Iddrisu’s work often engages with Islamic visual culture, found materials and traditional rituals.

Through media such as painting, photography/photo transfer, fabric printing and symbolic objects, she creates paradoxical spaces where historically excluded female figures are reimagined into narratives of presence, resistance and shared identity. Her practice is a continuous dialogue between the intimate and the political, exploring how women navigate and subtly subvert systems that seek to silence them. by @citizenprojectspace

In 2025, Citizen Projects (@citizenprojectspace ) and WCEHosts presented the Resisting Forgetfulness exhibition in Accra, Ghana. Whitney C Ernest (@wcedoesart ) curated the exhibition to explore the intertwined histories of art and politics and the role both played in shaping the visual identity of the defining music genre, Afrobeat(s).

The exhibition closed in January 2026 with an auditory journey through the past decades of the sound led by @_kikelomo_ of @orokoradio and a listening session with Alte pioneers @showdemcamp , powered by @trance.gh @jonbasiltequila

Beyond its aesthetic commentary, Resisting Forgetfulness demonstrated how creative practice can carry knowledge across generations. The intergenerational dialogue between Lemi Ghariokwu's iconic body of work and the practices of the younger exhibiting artists (each influenced by his legacy) stood as a testament to the power of art to shape collective consciousness beyond linguistic, geographical, and cultural boundaries.

Grateful to everyone who contributed to this chapter. More to come.

UPCOMING EXHIBITION: Opening on Saturday April 18th at 6pm, Citizen Projects and AMY Projects present Constellations Within - A group exhibition of three women reflecting on the genesis of their art.

Across immeasurable distances and separated by epochs of time, stars exist independently. Yet from a particular vantage point on Earth, they align. Light that has travelled for millennia converges in the present moment, and we recognize a figure.

In this exhibition, the works function as constellations of thought and feeling. They gather disparate impressions, fragments of stories and bring them into alignment through painting and collage. What appears as a recognisable motif is the result of accumulated distances: between artist and subject.

This exhibition features work by Ashiata Shaibu-Salami (b. Nigeria), Efia Serwah Barning (b. Ghana) and Rouquaiya Yerima (b. Togo)

SYNTHETIC DREAMS features Bubu Ogisi, Tamimbé Bourdanné, and Mamadou Ballo — exploring space through ritual installation and masquerade culture. Conceived as a sacred grove, the gallery echoes spaces traditionally reserved for masquerades, portals to our spiritual realm.

Blending human and animal morphologies, the pieces draw from African mask traditions, where exaggerated features protect and guard. Each work exists as a fragment, activated and completed through the viewer’s presence bridging the scientific and man-made present with expansive spiritual futures.

On view until 7th, March 2026 at Citizen Project Space.

Gallery hours: Wed–Sat, 11am–6pm.

Ivorian artist Mamadou Ballo traverses themes of genesis and creation, manifesting spiritual inquiry through the human form.

By repurposing found and discarded media, Ballo orchestrates a dialogue between matter and spirit, centering the feminine body as a profound nexus of life force.

His practice deeply investigates animist cosmologies, positioning the metamorphosis of materials as a sacred artistic ritual.

‘Synthetic Dreams’ is on view until 7th March, 2026.

As part of Synthetic Dreams, photographer Tamibé Bourdanné reflects on the creative process and collaborative dialogue behind the exhibition @tamibebourdanne

His reflections trace how place, intuition, and shared authorship shaped the work, from time spent in Mamadou Ballo’s atelier to spontaneous moments that blur the line between imagination and lived reality.

Synthetic Dreams is currently on view at Citizen Projects Space.

At the Museum of the African Diaspora (@moadsf) in San Francisco, David Alabo’s bronze sculpture series Future Relics continues to be presented as part of UNBOUND: Art, Blackness and the Universe, curated by Key Jo Lee (@keyjolee).

The expansive group exhibition marks MoAD’s 20th Anniversary and the launch of its renewed mission: to place contemporary art and artists of the African Diaspora at the center of the global cultural conversation.

UNBOUND brings together works spanning time, material, and medium, including 20th-century Dogon sculptures from Mali, Lorna Simpson’s Blue Turned Temporal (2019), David Alabo’s digital works and bronze sculptures, and Rashaad Newsome’s holographic African mask.

The exhibition remains on view through August 16, 2026.
