HAWTHORNE FAMILY ASKS COMMUNITY FOR SUPPORT AFTER MOTHER AND SON HOSPITALIZED

Verduzco family fundraiser seeks help with rent, living costs and medical bills during a long road to recovery. ❤️‍🩹

A Hawthorne family is reaching out to the community for support after a mother and her 17-year-old son were seriously injured in what the family describes as a violent attack.

According to a fundraiser organized on behalf of the Verduzco family, both underwent emergency surgery and remain hospitalized in critical condition. The family says the father has stopped working to stay at their bedside and it is unclear how long their hospital stay or recovery will last.

The family is raising funds to cover rent, utilities, household expenses and growing medical costs so they can focus on the health and healing of their loved ones. The campaign is listed in both English and Spanish.

In their message, the family asks first and foremost for prayers for strength and recovery. They note that every contribution helps, no matter the size and that those who cannot give financially can still help by sharing the fundraiser with others.

Moments like this remind us that community is more than a ZIP code. When one family in 90250 is hurting, a share, a kind word or a small donation can help carry them through. Please keep the Verduzco family in your thoughts and prayers.

Hawthorne officers were dispatched around 9:30 p.m. Friday to Coach’s Sports Bar & Grill in the 13700 block of South Inglewood Avenue after a report of a man carrying a gun inside.

When police arrived and encountered the suspect, an officer-involved shooting followed. The man was shot and rushed to a nearby hospital; his identity and current condition have not been released, and no other injuries were reported.

At the request of Hawthorne police, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has taken over the investigation into exactly what happened, which remains active and ongoing as of Friday night.

MOTHER AND TEEN SON BEATEN IN HAWTHORNE HOME; PERSON OF INTEREST IN CUSTODY

A Hawthorne woman and her teenage son were found severely beaten inside their apartment in the 4000 block of 139th Street, near Jim Thorpe Park and Prairie Avenue, after the woman's husband returned home around 3:20 p.m. Thursday.

Both victims suffered blunt-force trauma so severe that an emergency room doctor initially told the Sheriff's Department the mother's death was "imminent," but by Friday officials said both she and her teenage son were alive and in critical condition.

LA County Sheriff's homicide detectives are assisting Hawthorne Police in the investigation, and on Friday a person of interest was taken into custody — though only on charges unrelated to the attack, and authorities have not confirmed whether that person is connected to what happened.

Neighbors described the mother as warm and well-liked and said her brother had been living with the family; investigators say they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the community. Neighbors believe the brother of the woman might have something to do with the incident, but law enforcement have not confirmed that.

Male, who was riding skateboard was struck by vehicle. Driver stayed on scene while police did their reporting.

Paramedics took the male to local hospital. No other information provided. It was unknown who was "at fault", but whether walking, riding or driving, let's be careful at intersections and if you do get into an accident, please stay on scene. Accidents do happen.

Hawthorne School District, which serves about 6,700 students across 11 campuses in the South Bay, is asking voters to approve a $110 million construction bond — Measure HH — on the Nov. 3 general election ballot.

If passed with at least 55% approval, the money would fund renovation of aging facilities, campus safety and security upgrades, and new flexible learning spaces. The district estimates the bond would cost property owners an average of $30 per $100,000 of assessed value each year, or roughly $150 annually on a home assessed at $500,000.

Superintendent Brian Markarian argues students, staff, and families "deserve the highest-quality facilities," and district board members filed the only formal argument submitted on the measure.

No official opposition argument was filed, though critics of local bonds generally point to added costs for property owners and the district's declining enrollment. A previous 2018 bond, Measure HSD, raised $59 million for roof and HVAC repairs.
