I started working as a bar back at Mr Fives in Aug of 1991, having just graduated college a couple months prior. I lived around the corner, so the thought of working at a cool new night club and getting tips was kinda beyond my imagination. Low End Theory came out a few weeks later, then Brand Nubian, Gangstarr, Black Sheep, Cypress Hill, new Sade, Pal Joey and every week was like a new revolution in music. Mr Fives was a beautiful mixture of dancehall, hip hop, spoken word, deep house, soul, funk and early breaks/samples. Many nights you could hear all these styles flow fluidly within the span on an hour. Pharoahe Monch freestyled there; Q-Tip and Premier came by to check us out. One night Roger Sanchez DJed on 3 turntables, for like 5 hours. It was a Mecca for creatives in SF, new clothing companies, new musical artists, skaters, artists, poets, the whole gamut. I sold 2 bottles of Champaign to Mario Ellie on NYE Dec 31, 1991, swing guard and tenacious defender for the GS Warriors at the time. Another night all the members of BOOYA Tribe were there, just posted up at the bar in XXXL Pendletons. Those years massively inspired me and frankly sent me on the 🎶 course I’m still on. Thankfully. I’m DJing at @stillog.bar this Thurs 10/22 8-12midnight. All vinyl, with some classics from the epic Mr Fives era. Each one teach one. ❤️🎶🙏 by @cksmart5

I snapped this sepia print on Halloween, 1997 as we drove from Seattle across the border into Vancouver during the Deep Concentration Tour. The day before Cut, Wolf and I had flown in from Florida, @jazzbeezy and Radar met us in Seattle to grab a minivan rental, pack up 6 crates of records and 3 mixers and proceed into Canada for 1 Halloween show. Slide 2 is Wolf and Cut in the Seattle radio station 107.7, “The End”. My buddy at KEXP @dj_nasir68 had introduced their 🎶 to @djmarcocollins (pictured on R), who was one of the only modern rock DJs and Station Directors on the West Coast to give “Lesson 6” some plays. So did @aaronaxelsen on Live 105 in SF. Cut performed his Art of Noise routine over Laurie Anderson’s “O Superman” at the Seattle station that night, live on Modern Rock radio and I thought Marco’s head would explode🤯; he was completely taken back by the skill and creativity and clearly had never seen anything close. It’s was awesome. For the Halloween show in Canada, Cut found a pumpkin and carved a nice J5 logo in it, put a candle inside and positioned it front and center of the stage. Classic nerd shit. As for Jazzbo, he’s already won an Oscar with Questlove and his next film comes out next year, a doc on Dilla. CAN’T WAIT. I’m DJing at the Goldline tonight from 9pm-12am. This is without a doubt, my favorite bar to play in LA. Happy 30th Anniversary to Stones Throw, which was 1 year old when these photos were snapped. 😮 by @cksmart5

Tonight, Sunday Aug 9, at Sound By The Sea in Oceanside, 8pm-11pm I’ll be spinning through the history of Straight No Chaser Magazine, which I wrote for from ‘94-‘07. I did articles on Saul Williams, DJ Shadow, Blackalicious, Charlie Hunter, Ubiquity Records, DJ Greyboy, The Invisible Scratch Pickels, Joshua Redmond, Aceyalone, The Church of St John Coltrane and many others. It was a magical time, living in SF and writing for what was the best magazine for international black music in all London. Come roll through tonight and catch the ancient to future vibes…..(Editor and Publisher of SNC on slide 2) @paulbradshaw_snc98 by @cksmart5
