If you're only focusing on top-end speed in workouts, there's a reason your race pace isn't congruent with the numbers you're seeing in training.

There's nothing inherently wrong with workouts like 12 × 400m. They're valuable for developing speed, VO₂max, and the ability to run at higher intensities. However, if we're exclusively training at or above lactate threshold, we're potentially missing a really important component of distance-running development: the ability to sustain a strong aerobic effort.

Tempo running fills that gap. It allows us to spend more time working at a comfortably hard, controlled intensity, generally below or around lactate threshold, rather than repeatedly pushing into much higher-intensity territory.

The goal isn't just to teach your body how to run fast for short intervals. It's to improve how efficiently you can sustain a faster pace over time. We want to develop the ability to utilize oxygen, process and reuse lactate, and maintain a strong effort without accumulating fatigue too quickly.

Think of it this way: speed helps establish what you're capable of running, but aerobic strength and threshold development help determine how long you can sustain it.

Both types of training have a place. The key is making sure we're developing the entire aerobic and anaerobic system rather than continually emphasizing the top end.

Breathing shouldn’t be something you must consciously control. Because then, then it becomes like you’re trying to make something natural like running (and breathing!) a struggle that you must overcome.
