Everyone wants the advanced stuff.

The best athletes never outgrow the fundamentals.

That’s one thing I appreciate about @pheonixcopley No shortcuts. Just quality movement, intentional reps, and attention to detail.

The foundation comes first.

Back to work! Time under tension 🔥🔥🔥 by @coach_jheidegger

Future athletes? Maybe
Future healthy, confident kids? That’s the goal! ⚡️

Jax caught me looking at some cool speed training videos of @christianmccaffrey
He looked at me when I put my phone down and said “can I try that?” Music to my ears :)

Now, obviously, we didn’t do the drills that Christian was performing. Dude is elite, my son is six years old. 😂

Whole goal of this Saturday “speed session” and I use that term loosely 😜 was to move and have fun. I threw a couple drills at them that I use regularly with my highschoolers just to see how their brain would coordinate the movement. Fun to watch their bodies figure it out!

The highlights for me were seeing Jaxon coach his sister 🥹 and being reminded the training age gap in kids of all ages. And a Saturday morning wouldn’t be complete without my son changing his wardrobe at least twice. The parents out there know what I’m talking about.

These were the “Drills” we MOVED through…

- high knee taps - made this one up so they could practice opposite arm opposite leg coordination)
- Marching
- Skipping
- “Pogo Stick” jumps
- “Frog” jumps
- Family races :)

If you’re a parent and you have young kids, get them MOVING!!! Try these out if you need a place to start but more than anything just make sure whatever you have them do it’s fun/play based. That’s how the brain learns best. 💪 #kidsplay #kidssports #movementismedicine #speedworkouts by @coach_jheidegger

Movement Monday - MB throws, crawling, battle ropes, 3-Cone mirror drill, @triphasic_training GOAT drill, lateral partner sled drag. Followed this up with an awesome upper-body focused lift. Never miss a Monday! by @coach_jheidegger

THURSDAY - Max Velo Sprints and Big Squats. Shaking the dust off to start the summer and focusing on technique and intent. If you fall in love with the process, give it time, BIG things just happen eventually! by @coach_jheidegger

Low Egos, High Outputs with Coach Josh Heidegger
-
Last week we had the opportunity to do something I’ve been looking forward to for quite some time now. We sat down with @coach_jheidegger and had a great discussion about performance, coaching, leadership, life, and much more.
-
Josh is one of my biggest mentors in both coaching and life. He’s also a great friend, father, husband, and a brilliant mind in the performance world.
-
Josh has coached at Washington, Cal, Tulane, and spent 8 years at USC where he was Director of Olympic Sports Performance. He is now the High Performance Manager at Northwest Nazarene University (his Alma mater). As an athlete he competed for NNU and the University of Oregon where he threw Javelin.
-
Hope you enjoy this one as much as we did 👊

Love BIG by @coach_jheidegger

Should young coaches start at D2/D3 and work their way up? Or aim for D1 right away?

Missed this episode? Here’s another nugget and why you need to watch! Josh Heidegger breaks it down. 💡

The real key...It’s not about the level—it’s about getting around the right people. The best way to grow in this profession is to learn from those who are doing it well.

On the 21st episode of #TheStandard host Taylor Bateman sits down with Josh Heidegger.

In this clip they discuss how to handle the high volume of rotation and swinging that young baseball players engage in as they transition from club to varsity and collegiate levels. The focus is on building capacity for productive rotation, identifying any red flags, and managing the training load based on the practice and game schedule.

Josh Heidegger spent 8 years (2016-23) on USC’s sports performance staff. In 2019, he became the Director of Sports Performance for all of USC’s Olympic sports. Before that, he assisted with the football program. He oversaw training for USC’s baseball, men’s tennis and women’s golf programs.

Heidegger graduated from Oregon in 2012 where he threw the javelin for the Oregon track and field team.

Gratitude fills my heart as I bid farewell to @usc_sportsperformance and @usc_athletics . Over 8 incredible years, I’ve poured my passion into guiding athletes as a Sports Performance Coach here. Being allowed to lead this place as the Director was the privilege of a lifetime. To every athlete, colleague, and supporter: thank you for the unforgettable journey. Your dedication, resilience, and camaraderie have shaped not just athletes, but also me. As I embark on a new chapter, know that the memories and lessons from USC will forever hold a special place in my heart. Fight on, always. by @coach_jheidegger
