Man… I had to let this one sink in before I posted it. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to receive recognition for my impact on my community. Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that I would have a mural… or live to see it. Thank you, @chbcartgallery, for acknowledging this guy from Southeast DC. Thank you, @nicolebourgea, for painting this beautiful piece of art. When I was contacted, I thought it was a joke. They asked for a picture, so I sent one that was recent and extremely professional. They responded, “Too square, Coates!” 🤣🤣🤣 True story. So, I sent a few others, and the one they selected was perfect for the project. It was a picture from when I received my master’s degree—a picture that displayed a man from Southeast who graduated from DC Public Schools, overcame adversity and external pressures, beat the odds, made it out of Southeast, and came back to invest in the city that invested in him. Doing this work isn’t easy. Long nights, huge financial investments, funerals, jail calls, and visits—it makes you question yourself. It makes you doubt yourself. It makes you wonder if you’re really making a difference. Through all of that, moments like this remind you that there are always people watching, following, and supporting you. This mural is a reflection of the entire community—those I’ve impacted and those who’ve impacted me. It’s a reflection of my family, my mentors, and everyone I’ve had the opportunity to cross paths with in my lifetime. I am deeply honored and grateful for this recognition. If you have the opportunity, please check out my mural and many others at 1603 Marion Barry Jr. Ave SE. by @coach_marcus

Blessed to work beside a great group of recreation professionals. These are some of the individuals that keep the systems running, daily. Last night, we hosted nearly 1000 teenagers at the CareFirst Arena in Southeast! Shoutout to the Director @thefreedc, her vision, and mission to create safe spaces for DC teens! by @coach_marcus

Some know you for who you are. Some remember you for who you were. No one believes who you’ll become. In the end, it’s you versus you. Which version will win? #WhoDoYouBelieveIn by @coach_marcus
