Thankful to be a speaker at this year's HLC Student-Athlete Leadership Conference! I really enjoyed getting to meet with so many great athletes and sharing with them why I believe they make better leaders for their teams than us coaches could ever hope to be.

I'm honored to be able to represent Shelbyville High School and our track & field team, in particular. Best of all, I got to share the day with a few of my own athletes! by @coachblakey91

The 2026 USATF Masters Outdoor National Championships didn't go as anyone had planned.

The air quality on Thursday and Friday was amongst the worst in the country, so the meet was delayed for two days. Running a condensed schedule on Saturday and Sunday, some events were moved to the indoor track so that both tracks could be used simultaneously. The 400m dash on Saturday was one of those events.

I felt like I got out well in that race, but I locked up harder than I've ever locked up before in the final 100m. I was sure I was going to hit the track before the finish line, but I somehow made it through. It was a disappointing result after all of the waiting.

On Sunday, I competed in the 400m hurdles, 200m dash, and 4x400m relay. For some reason, I didn't have my top gear. It just wasn't there. It wasn't my day.

While my results were pretty disappointing, I am happy to say that for the first time in four years, I was healthy enough to run all of my events at the national meet. Health > injury every time. And it was great getting to hang out and catch up with friends between races. Looking forward to the next one, as always! by @coachblakey91

Thirty-five years in and it's exciting to know that I haven't reached the peak in any area of my life yet.

Thank you for all of the birthday wishes! I've been feeling the love for sure. by @coachblakey91

I think it's natural that most track coaches experience a sense of relief at the end of each season.

The official high school season is 16 weeks long if you're lucky enough to make the state meet. I can nearly double that by offering my winter sprints program a few nights per week beginning in November and running all the way up to the official start of the season.

I spend roughly 31 weeks of programming for sprinters, setting up team meetings, trying to predict the weather, scheduling transportation, tracking results and improvements, managing rosters across several platforms, registering athletes for meets, spending late nights at meets, answering parent questions, taking and editing photographs, taking and editing videos, making write-ups to send to the press, scheduling volunteers for our home meets, clerking our home meets, organizing fundraisers, asking for money in our fundraisers, choosing award winners, ordering awards, scheduling and coordinating an awards night, and so many more little things that I can't even list them all. Each season takes so much out of me and, somehow, each season is even more tiring than the last. And you know what happens once the season abruptly ends?

I miss it. Immediately. No relief.

Because even though I may become exhausted by the minutiae of my responsibilities, I feed on the energy of being with my athletes. I get to joke, laugh, and trash talk between reps. I get to hear about their weekend plans. I get to tell them stories and listen to theirs. I get to learn about their life goals and dreams. I get to work with them through tough training and even sometimes run alongside them. I get to hear them set goals and watch them strive towards them. I get to watch them grow in confidence and leadership. I get to comfort them through their losses. I get to celebrate with them during their successes. I get to see the joy on their face when they realize they can accomplish so much more than they originally thought possible.

Why would I ever want that to end? by @coachblakey91

Best day of my coaching career to date, and I don't say that lightly.

A big season best by the 4x8, the fastest 4x1 I've ever had, and school records in the 300 hurdles and 4x4.

Coaching @diana.gascaa these four years has been unbelievable. Hands down the best example of servant leadership a coach could ask for. To end her high school career on such a high note, I couldn't be happier for her. I cannot begin to tell you how much I'll miss having her around on a daily basis.

And I couldn't help but feel overwhelming pride to be there with @sonora.lynn as she crossed the finish line of the 300 hurdles. Coming off of a torn PCL, you cannot possibly fathom the amount of time, energy, and effort that went into that school record run. Only to follow it up with another record run about an hour later. She now owns three school records, the most of any SHS track & field athlete.

And oh yeah, did I mention the record that @m.a.c.e.y.11 @a13na_c @jordyn_noe4 and Sonora broke was from 1983? 43 years of coaches and athletes preparing and pushing towards that goal, but all of them coming up short. Until this group.

All of our girls are just absolutely amazing. I am so incredibly, astoundingly, unimaginably lucky to be their coach.

I didn't want to go to bed after this meet because nothing I could dream of was going to be better. (especially if you know how I dream 😅 iykyk)

So much love for this group and memories I'll carry with me for the rest of my life. by @coachblakey91

"What is excellence—what is caring deeply and paying attention and repeated practice and learning from failure and staying curious and steadfast dedication and getting really close and feeling deeply and showing up over and over again—if not love?

Speed day!

I'm not going to kid myself into believing the sun is here to stay, but it was nice to be able to take advantage of it for some 60s! 😅

As the season progresses, my speed days will transition to more speed endurance work, which I'm looking forward to. It's an important aspect of 400m training, and also my favorite kind of workout.

The hamstring is fully intact again and I'm excited to be moving into the outdoor season! 😁
