A lot of creatives think they’re one connection away from their next opportunity.

Sometimes they’re actually one search away.

The reality is that many songwriters already have songs that could fit what an A&R, publisher, artist, or music supervisor is looking for. The problem is that when someone asks for a specific sound, mood, tempo, or vocal style, most people can’t confidently pull up the right track on the spot.

And that matters more than people think.

The writers who get considered first aren’t always the most talented in the room. They’re often the ones who can answer immediately.

In a world where everyone has access to recording tools, being organized is becoming its own creative advantage.

How searchable is your catalog right now?. If you’re the type of person to always be prepared in a writing session, visit my website Coda-Vault at https://www.coda-vault.com/, and remember! We handle the infrastructure so you can focus on your art :)

‪‪Getting a large advance sounds exciting—until you understand how recoupment works. Many artists focus entirely on ownership percentages without realizing that recoupable expenses can dramatically affect when they actually start earning money.‬‬

‪Advances, recording budgets, marketing costs, and other investments often get paid back from royalties before artists see income. That’s why understanding deal structures is just as important as understanding ownership. The smartest creators don’t just ask “How much am I getting?” They ask “How am I getting paid?”. One of the most valuable assets in music isn’t the recording.

It’s the composition.

That’s why songs written decades ago can still generate revenue today when elements of the original composition are used in new works.

A lot of people think songwriting credits are just about giving recognition. In reality, they’re also about determining who participates in the value a song creates over time.

The interesting part is that ownership conversations don’t start when a song becomes successful. They start much earlier—when writers begin deciding what is original, what has been borrowed, and what rights may still be attached to the music they’re creating.

The songs that create the biggest disputes are rarely the ones nobody hears.

They’re the ones that become valuable.

Which is why experienced writers tend to think about credits, ownership, and publishing long before release day.

What do you think more songwriters misunderstand: copyright or publishing?

Most songwriters obsess over streams, playlists, and releases
but many never learn where performance royalties actually come from. A PRO (Performing Rights Organization) exists to make sure songwriters get paid when their music is played publicly, whether that’s on streaming platforms, radio, TV, live venues, restaurants, or clubs.

The problem? A surprising number of creators either never register with a PRO or fail to properly register their songs and splits. That can lead to delayed payments, missing royalties, and money being left on the table. Ownership matters, but getting paid for your ownership matters even more. Something every songwriter should know before their first session…

You already own the copyright to that song you wrote last night. The second it exists in a tangible form (a voice memo, a notebook, a phone recording) it’s yours.

But owning it and being able to prove it? Two very different things.

This is one of the most common points of confusion we see with composers just starting out.

Registration doesn’t create your copyright. It protects your ability to defend it when it actually matters.

Without it:
— Filing a lawsuit if someone steals your work gets complicated
— Proving you were first gets harder
— Your ability to claim damages in a dispute is limited

Always consult a music attorney for your specific situation

Social media loves to make success look expensive. Fancy studios, giant teams, expensive gear, and perfect roadmaps dominate our feeds. But most successful projects start much smaller than people think. Progress usually comes from consistency, curiosity, and a willingness to keep learning even when you feel behind. Whether you’re building music, a business, or a creative career, the people who stick with it often outperform the people waiting for perfect conditions. Behind every platform is usually a problem someone experienced firsthand. After studying music business and seeing how many talented creators struggled with contracts, registrations, and industry terminology, I realized there had to be a better way. That’s why I started building Coda-Vault: a platform designed to help songwriters organize their catalogs, showcase their work, connect with industry professionals, and spend less time buried in paperwork. Creativity deserves tools that support artists, not replace them. AI can’t create art .

CodaVault uses AI to handle the paperwork, the contracts, the tagging, the admin, all the things that slow artists down and keep them from doing what they actually do.

Creating.

Art is human. It always has been. The second we forget that, we lose the whole point.

My job is to protect your time and your rights so you can stay in that human space as long as possible by @coda.vault

One of the biggest mistakes artists make is signing with the wrong company for the wrong
reason. Distributors, publishers, and record labels all serve different purposes and
understanding the difference can save you years of frustration.
If your goal is distribution and independence, a distributor may be the right fit. If your biggest
asset is your songwriting, a publisher can help monetize and place your songs. And if you’re
looking for investment, marketing power, and career development, a label may provide the
infrastructure you need. The best deal depends on your goals, not someone else’s. If you’re
